Addis Ababa, 06 October 2015 (ECA) – Ministers at the inaugural Conference of the Specialized Technical Committee (STC) on Agriculture, Rural Development, Water and Environment called for the establishment of an African Land Policy Centre “to provide leadership, coordination, build partnerships and promote policy advocacy in support of member states.”
The Land Policy Initiative in collaboration with the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN)/UN-Habitat and RCMRD will hold a Training of Trainers Workshop in Transparency in Land Administration starting from 6-8 October 2015 at the premises of the RCMRD, Nairobi, Kenya. The training is organized as part of the Partnership project LPI- UN Habitat to implement a Capacity Development project in Africa.
Theinaugural NELGA Project Steering Committee (PSC) will be held on 26 November 2015. This follows the recent (July) signing of the ECA/BMZ/World Bank agreement in which the three partners defined areas of cooperation and modalities to establish a network of excellence on land governance in Africa. A financing agreement is soon to be signed between GIZ and ECA in this regard for the NELGA project, to be complemented by a trust fund established at the World Bank.
The inaugural LPI/FAO Project Steering Committee (PSC) will be held on 26 November 2015 in the morning, The establishment of the PSC follows the signing of the ECA/FAO MOU in July 2014, which defines areas of cooperation and modalities for building synergies and enhancing coordination in the area of land policy and governance. A project was established in this regard, seconding two FAO staff members to the LPI/ECA.
The LPI Steering Committee (SC) will be held on 25 November. The SC will draw heavily on the outcomes of the Implementing Partners Meeting to be held on 23-24 November 2015 and examine progress made in the implementation of the 2015 LPI Work Plan and budget. The plan includes the joint projects at the national, regional and continental levels which will be subject of the implementing partners meeting, with highlights presented to the LPI SC.
The third LPI implementing partners Meeting will be held on 23-24 November to take stock of progress in the development and implementation of joint projects on land policy and governance between the LPI and its key implementing partners. In particular, the meeting will examine progress made in the implementing of the following joint projects: Zambia/LPI/ECA; Niger/LPI/SDC; IGAD/LPI/SDC; PAFO/LPI; CSO Platform/LPI; FAO/LPI/EU/SDC; LPI/UN-Habitat/GLTN; LPI/AfDB; LPI/ACG (ECA).
The Land Policy Initiative is a joint programme of the tripartite consortium consisting of the African Union Commission (AUC), the African Development Bank (AfDB) and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). Its purpose is to enable the use of land to lend impetus to the process of African development. The programme is governed by a Steering Committee that meets periodically, while a joint secretariat implements day to day activities. The secretariat is assisted by an African Taskforce on Land.
