Traditional leaders converge for training on land negotiations skills

Accra, 16 November 2016 (ECA) - A two-day seminar to sensitize African traditional leaders on the risks and opportunities of large-scale land based investments (LSLBIs) kicked off Wednesday in Accra, Ghana, with more than 50 traditional authorities and community leaders from across Africa.

Organized by the Land Policy Initiative (LPI), the event will equip traditional leaders with key principles for negotiating land investment deals that are sustainable and beneficial to African people and communities.

Land and Agriculture Ministries commit to integrate land governance concerns in agriculture

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 4 October 2016 (ECA) - African ministries of agriculture and land have welcomed the launch of pilot projects to mainstream land governance in agricultural strategies and plans, committing to ensure the two ministries collaborate to make sure land reform programs secure land rights, provide equal access to land, and promote responsible agriculture investments to advance agriculture and rural transformation.

Universities to develop curricula in response to Africa’s land governance challenges

Addis Ababa, 26-28 July, 2016 (ECA) - Senior leadership drawn from sixteen African universities and institutions of higher learning endorsed key recommendations to review land governance curricula, with a view to ensuring land professions better respond to Africa’s realities. Participants, who also included representatives of RECs, Member States, Civil Society Organisations and the private sector, were attending a three-day validation workshop, organized by the Land Policy Initiative (LPI).

Validation Workshop of the Assessment Report on Needs and Gaps of Curricula on Land Governance

The AU Framework and Guidelines on land policy in Africa identifies one of the main challenges to Land policy implementation as lack of capacity to manage change. Among other factors, lack of technological know-how required to manage contemporary land reform programmes is cited as a major constraint.

Launch of the 30% campaign for women’s land ownership in Africa

The Land Policy Initiative (LPI) in partnership with the AUC Department of Rural Economy and Agriculture (DREA) will launch the 30% campaign for Women’s land ownership on 8 July 2016. This campaign will support the implementation of the decision endorsed by the AU Specialized Technical Committee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Water and Environment (STC) –in October 2015 recommending member states to” move towards allocation of 30% of land to women to improve the rights of women to land through legislative and other mechanisms”.

Ministerial dialogue: focus on good land governance in Africa

Addis Ababa, 22 April 2016 – African Governments’ reinforced commitment, and solid support from partners are needed to properly address the land governance challenges that the continent continues to face. Of critical importance, in view of implementing Agenda 2030, is for countries to improve land governance and make concrete progress towards strengthening the land rights of women in Africa.

African civil society: strong advocacy agenda on land issues

Addis Ababa, 25 April 2016 - The Land Policy Initiative - Civil Society Organizations (LPI-CSO) Platform  organized a two-day workshop to validate thematic papers that will form the basis of an advocacy agenda for the LPI-CSO working groups. The workshop was a side event to the High Level Forum on United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management, held in Addis Ababa under the theme “Good land governance for the 2030 Agenda”.

Third Capitalization Meeting of the EU Land Governance Programme in Africa

The Land Policy Initiative (LPI) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will organize on 3 and 4 May 2016 the third capitalization meeting of the EU Land Governance Programme in Africa. The meeting will review progress made in the execution of country level and transversal projects, as they relate to the implementation of Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT) and the Framework and Guidelines on Land Policy in Africa (F&G).
