Title
The Land Policy Initiative (LPI) in partnership with the AUC Department of Rural Economy and Agriculture (DREA) will launch the 30% campaign for Women’s land ownership on 8 July 2016. This campaign will support the implementation of the decision endorsed by the AU Specialized Technical Committee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Water and Environment (STC) –in October 2015 recommending member states to” move towards allocation of 30% of land to women to improve the rights of women to land through legislative and other mechanisms”. The launch will take place in the auspices of the 3rd African Union High Level Panel on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment scheduled to take place as an AU Summit pre event on 8-9 July 2016. The launch will be organized in collaboration with the LPI Civil society Platform and Kilimanjaro Initiative, which has mobilized thousands of grassroots women across the continent to advocate for implementation of all progressive instruments for women’s empowerment.
The event will aim to create awareness on and mobilize support towards the 30% target of documented land ownership for women by 2025; to build political support amongst key decision makers including African Heads of State.
The event will be attended by representatives of the AU member states, the RECs, Civil Society and other stakeholders participating in the 3rd African Union High Level Panel on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment event.
