Network of Excellence on Land Governance in Africa: first call for scholarships

Addis Ababa, 21 April 2016 - The Land Policy Initiative (LPI) and the Government of Germany officially launched yesterday the Scholarship Programme for the Network of Excellence on Land Governance in Africa (NELGA), which will make available about 100 scholarships for land governance students at Master’s and PhD levels. The programme is meant to strengthen ties between African universities, enhance student mobility, and create opportunities for knowledge sharing, research and best practices in land governance.

LPI Steering Committee Meeting

The purpose of this regular LPI Steering Committee Meeting is to review the progress made in the implementation of the LPI work plan as well as the decisions taken during last meeting held in November 2015, and reflect on and provide strategic guidance with regard to emerging land issues.

Ministerial dialogue on land governance in Africa

The Land Policy Initiative (LPI) will organize a Ministerial dialogue on land governance in Africa, on 21 April 2016, at the UN Conference Center in Addis Ababa. The session will discuss key land governance issues in the context of implementing the Agenda 2030 at national levels, with the aim to agree on promising avenues for partnership to cooperate to achieve the SDG goals. The exchanges are equally expected to identify concrete modalities to strengthen women’s land rights in Africa.

Launch of the Scholarship Program for the Network of Excellence on Land Governance in Africa

The Land Policy Initiative (LPI) and the Government of Germany will officially launch the Scholarship Program for the Network of Excellence on Land Governance in Africa (NELGA) during a cocktail event to be held on 20 April 2016, at the Radisson Hotel in Addis Ababa. NELGA is supported by the German government under the program “Strengthening capacities for land governance in Africa (SLGA)”.

LPI-CSO: Thematic papers validation workshop

The Land Policy Initiative - Civil Society Organizations (LPI-CSO) Platform will organize a two-day workshop to validate thematic papers that will form the basis of an advocacy agenda for the LPI-CSO working groups. The workshop will be a side event to the High Level Forum on United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management, to be held in Addis Ababa under the theme “Good land governance for the 2030 Agenda”. The meeting will discuss and validate the issue papers, and agree on the emerging advocacy strategy on land issues.

Women’s rights to land must be strengthened: African parliamentarians

Addis Ababa, 4 March 2016 – The Land Policy Initiative (LPI) participated in a workshop organized by the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) on the theme “Strengthening women’s rights to land access: a parliamentarian response to close gender gap for economic development through agriculture. The one-day session was held on 1 March 2016, in Johannesburg, South Africa as a side event of the first statutory PAP meeting taking place from 29 February to 6 March 2016.

Experts validate universities to anchor land training and research in Africa

Addis Ababa, 25 February 2016 - The Land Policy Initiative (LPI) will organize tomorrow a one-daymeeting that will review to validate the selection of leading universities that could provide the basis for the establishment of the Network of Excellence on Land Governance in Africa (NELGA) to anchor a programme for training and research.

Consultation meeting in support of the establishment of the Network of Excellence on Land Governance in Africa

The Land Policy Initiative organizes a one-day meeting that will review and validate the proposed universities that could provide the basis for the establishment of the Network of Excellence on Land Governance in Africa (NELGA) to anchor a program for training and research. The selection of universities is proposed by a recent study undertaken by the Land Policy Initiative to assess the gaps in training and research on land governance.

Land Policy Initiative events at the 2016 World Bank Conference on Land and Poverty

The Land Policy Initiative (LPI) will take part in the upcoming World Bank 2016 Annual Conference on Land and Poverty by organizing sessions and side events during the five-day global gathering. The LPI will organize a session on the “Status of the implementation of the African Union Declaration on Land,”,  host an African policy makers dialogue session and a joint session together with BMZ, GIZ and the World Bank on Opportunities for strengthening African technical and analytical capacity on land. The team will seize the opportunity to bilaterally engage with partners.

IGAD- LPI-SDC Project Progress Review and Planning and Steering Committee Meetings

The project planning retreat and steering committee meetings intend to provide an opportunity to the participants to reflect on the progress of the project, share countries and regional economic communities’ experiences of the implementation of the AU declaration on land and approve the revised 2016 work plan and budget.
