ECA, Germany and World Bank to launch new network of excellence on land governance

Joint Press Release: Addis Ababa, 13 July, 2015 - The United Nations Economic Commission (ECA), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the World Bank, today signed a Declaration of Intent to establisha new Network of Excellence on Land Governance in Africa (NELGA) to better secure land rights across Africa. 

 NELGA will complement and support the Land Policy Initiative (LPI), a tripartite partnership of the African Union Commission (AUC), African Development Bank (AfDB) and ECA.

Civil Society Workshop to raise awareness and train CSOs on Land Policy process in Zambia

The workshop will bring together Civil Society Organizations working on the land policy issues in Zambia. It will be hosted by the Zambia Land Alliance (ZLA) under the auspices of the ECA/LPI funded project aimed at enhancing awareness and engagement of the CSOs in support of the Land Policy process.

Multi-stakeholder technical committee on land of the Sector Advisory Group (SAG) on land and environment in Zambia

An inaugural Multi-stakeholder land technical committee is scheduled to take place on 24 June 2015. The meeting will be organized by the Zambia Ministry of Lands, Natural Resources and Environmental Planning (MLNREP) in the auspices of the ECA/LPI supported project aimed at supporting the development/review of a land policy. Outcomes of the technical committee on land will feed into discussions by the Sector Advisory Group (SAG) on land and environment.

Land Policy in Africa: Eastern Africa Regional Assessment

The African Union Commission (AUC) and African Heads of State and Government are committed to providing a conducive environment for economic growth, poverty reduction and equitable sustainable development. In this context, the quality of governance of land and natural resources is an important factor. Accordingly, better performance of land policies and institutions is required to deliver development goals. Land reforms must equitably address the needs of all land users, including smallholder farmers, the private sector, the urban poor and slum dwellers.

Land Policy Initiative Update: Steering Committee lauds progress, approves 2015 work plan
