Platform for learning and sharing experiences: a must for sound land governance in Africa

Niamey, 26 February 2015 – African countries welcome a platform for coordination and sharing of lessons, knowledge and experience in order to enhance land governance in accordance with the African Union Declaration on Land Issues and Challenges in Africa. This was pronounced by H.E. Ada Cheffou, Minister of Environment, Urban Safety, and Sustainable Development of the Republic of Niger, during the launch of the “EU-SDC-FAO-LPI Transversal Support Programme on Land Governance in Africa.”

Partners agree on key steps to implement new land governance project

Djibouti, 23 February 2015 - The Project Steering Committee (PSC) for the “Project to improve land governance in the IGAD region”, jointly developed by the Land Policy Initiative (LPI), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), met for the first time last week, in Djibouti, on the heels of a successful official project launch. The PSC approved its terms of reference, and the 2015 work plan and budget, laying the foundations for the implementation of project activities.

Good land governance: critical for peaceful and sustainable development

Djibouti, 20 February 2015 (ECA) – Fifty-five high level representatives from the Djibouti government,  the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Member States, the African Union Commission, civil society organizations, and the media witnessed the launch of the first regional project to support the implementation of the African Union Declaration on Land Issues and Challenges.

The project will be implemented jointly by the Land Policy Initiative (LPI) and IGAD with the support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

Consultative meeting paves way for partnership to advance effective land administration in Ethiopian

Addis Ababa, 13 February 2015 – Representatives of the Land Policy Initiative (LPI) and the Rural Land Administration and Use Directorate (LAUD) of the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) engaged in a consultation meeting to explore areas of possible collaboration between the two institutions.

The LPI gender strategy: a learning tool for empowering women

Addis Ababa, 6 February 2015 - The Expert Group Meeting (EGM) organized by the Land Policy Initiative (LPI) on 4 and 5 February 2015 in Entebbe, Uganda, was successful in reviewing and validating the Gender Strategy of the organization. The meeting provided further recommendations for the finalization of the document, and identified key follow-up actions and activities as well as the actors to play specific roles in their implementation.

Launch of the EU-SDC Programme on Land Governance in Africa, and related events

The Land Policy Initiative (LPI) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the Government of Niger, organize a series of events to launch the EU-SDC Programme on Land Governance in Africa. The programme promotes an integrated implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT) and the Framework and Guidelines on Land Policy in Africa (F&G).
