Pilot study tracking implementation of AU land declaration launched in Ghana

Accra, Ghana, 20 July 2017 (ECA) – The Land Policy Initiative (LPI) and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) today unveiled a Monitoring and Evaluation of Land in Africa (MELA) project to track progress in the implementation of the African Union Declaration on Land Issues and Challenges in 12 African countries.

The pilot project was launched at an inception workshop in Accra, a day after Africa’s Land Commissions completed their own workshop on securing community land rights on the continent.

African land commissioners’ workshop on securing community land rights opens in Accra

Accra, Ghana, 17 July 2017 (ECA) – The first ever meeting of African Land Commissioners opened in Accra Monday with Ghana’s Lands and Natural Resources Minister, John-Peter Amewu, lamenting the extreme levels of poverty in some parts of the continent despite the availability of vast arable land resources.

In his opening address to the Land Commissioners, senior government officials, representatives of civil society and others attending the meeting on how the continent can secure community land rights, the minister described the situation as alarming.

Regional workshop on securing community land rights set for Accra

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, July 15, 2017 (ECA) – The Land Policy Initiative (LPI), in partnership with the Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI), are next week convening a regional workshop with African Land Commissions on Securing Community Land Rights on the continent.

Forty Land Commissioners and senior government officials from 16 African countries will attend the three-day meeting that begins Monday 17 July to deliberate on issues relating to securing community land rights.

Regional Workshop with African Land Commissions on Securing Community Land Rights

The Regional Workshop is a joint programme organized by the Land Policy Initiative (LPI) in partnership with the Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI) and in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources of Ghana and Civic Response. The workshop will convene Land Commissioners and government officials from 16 African countries to deliberate on issues relating to securing community land rights.
