African gov’ts urged to move with speed to address over-dependence on imported medicines

Addis Ababa, June 28, 2019 (ECA) – The two-day Horn of Africa trade forum ended Friday in Addis Ababa with participants agreeing that with the African Continental Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) now in force, it was time for the continent to increase domestic production of pharmaceutical products and end over dependence on imported medicines.

The AfCFTA, they agreed, provides an opportunity for economies of scale, lack of which previously hindered African pharmaceuticals production.

EU to provide 40 billion euros in grants to help create jobs in Africa

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, June 27, 2019 (ECA) – The European Union Commission fully supports the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) and is proposing a 40 billion Euro package to attract investments that would create at least 10 million jobs in Africa.

This was revealed by Ambassador Ranieri Sabatucci, the EU Ambassador to the African Union, in an opening address to a two-day Horn of Africa AfCFTA forum focusing on the pharmaceutical industry.

All set for Horn of Africa trade forum focusing on region’s pharmaceutical industry

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, June 26, 2019 (ECA) – All is set for the two-day regional trade forum for the Horn of Africa focusing on the implementation of the historic African Continental Free Trade Agreement that went into force on 30 May.

The theme of the forum is: “AfCFTA Implementation: Breaking Down Geographical, Logistical and Regulatory Barriers to Trade and Investment in the Horn to Boost Industrialisation: A Focus on the Pharmaceutical Industry”.

Zimbabwe poised for AfCFTA gains

Harare, Zimbabwe, June 19, 2019 (ECA) –  “Zimbabwe, having the second largest platinum and chrome deposits and 5th largest lithium in the world can attract investment capital across the Continent as the barriers to free trade and investments are deconstructed through the AfCFTA,” said Said Adejumobi, Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Regional Director for Southern Africa.

He made the remarks at the start of a two-day National Forum on the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) in Zimbabwe on June 19, 2019.

Strathmore law students win global moot court competition

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 10 June 2019 (ECA) – Strathmore University’s law students scored a first this weekend when they beat Harvard University’s Law School team in the final round of the John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition on World Trade Organization (WTO) Law that was held Saturday in Geneva, Switzerland.

This is the first time that an African team has won the competition which features the best teams from Europe, the Americas, and Asia-Pacific regions.
