ECA and UNCTAD conduct three-day workshop on trade services in Africa

Addis Ababa, January 30, 2019 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for African (ECA) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) have teamed up to help develop the trade services in Africa by promoting integration into regional value chains.

The two UN entities agree that integration into higher value-added activities in the global and regional value chains is crucial for development outcomes for the continent and will go a long way to help the continent realize its Sustainable Development Goals.

Empowering women and youth in the new AfCFTA era crucial

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, December 31, 2018 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa’s African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC) recently held a workshop to discuss how women and the youth can be empowered in the new African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) era.

The discussion, held under the theme; Empowering African women and youth in the new AfCFTA era – Making AfCFTA a reality for women and youth, addressed issues faced by women-led and young people-led businesses, notably Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the context of the evolving trading environment.

Intra-African Trade Fair set to unlock Africa’s potential as more countries expected to sign & ratify AfCFTA

Addis Ababa, December 28, 2018 (ECA) - Africa’s biggest story in 2018 was the signing of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), which is set to change the face of the continent with the creation of an integrated market of over one billion people and a combined GDP of approximately $3.3 trillion.

Given the minimum requirement of 22 ratifications for the AfCFTA to go into force, the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) continues to urge African countries that are yet to sign and ratify the accord to do so.

Inaugural Intra-African Trade Fair Ends, Kigali Announced Host of IATF2020

Cairo, 17 December 2018 - The inaugural Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF 2018) ended in Cairo today with the Rwandese capital of Kigali being announced as the host of the 2020 event.

Former Nigeria President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, who is also Chairman of the IATF Advisory Council, made the announcement during the closing ceremony, saying that Kigali was selected following a competitive bidding process that took into account a set of criteria and guidelines outlined for IATF hosts.
