AfCFTA Regional Trade Forum – Horn of Africa

On 21 March 2018 in Kigali, Rwanda, 44 AU member States signed the Agreement establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). An additional eight member states have signed the agreement since then, while the twenty-two have ratified it so far. The AfCFTA will enter into force after 22 African countries have deposited their instruments of ratification with the Africa Union Commission.

ATPC supporting empowerment of Africa’s future trade negotiators

Nairobi, 24 April 2019 (ECA) - The African Regional Round of the global John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition, formerly known as the ELSA Moot Court Competition on the Law of the World Trade Organization (WTO), is underway Nairobi where it is being hosted by the Kenya School of Law (KSL).

Twenty university teams representing nine African countries; Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and Zimbabwe, are participating in the Sixth African Regional Round of the competition.

Vera Songwe urges Cameroon to lead Central Africa into continental free trade and digital economy

Yaounde, 22 April 2019 (ECA) – Much to an ecstatic applause from the academic community and members of the Government of Cameroon, the Execrative Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) – Ms. Vera Songwe, made a strong case for the country to ratify and take leadership in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement while toning up its digital economy, as she ended her first official visit there recently.

African Free Trade is almost here, delegates to ECA’s 52nd Session rejoice

Marrakech, 22 March 2019 (ECA) – Delegates attending the 38th meeting of the Committee of Experts of the ECA Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development have applauded the Federal Republic of Ethiopia for having just ratified the instruments instituting the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), in a plenary debate in which the AfCFTA was given prime focus.
