Recipe for AfCFTA: New report looks at ‘what’s next’ for the Continental Agreement

Niamey, 6 July 2019 (ECA) - The ninth edition of the flagship Assessing Regional Integration in Africa report (ARIA IX) was launched on 6 July 2019 during the African Business Forum in Niamey, Niger.

It is titled ‘Next Steps for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).’ The report argues that AfCFTA’s success will be measured largely by its ability to actually change lives, reduce poverty and contribute to economic development in Africa.

Launch of joint ECA-OHCHR-FES publication on the human rights and inclusion dimensions of digital trade in Africa

Geneva, Switzerland, 4 July 2019:  At the 2019 Aid for Trade Global Review, ECA jointly launched a publication with the UN Office of the High Commission for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) Geneva office titled “Digital Trade in Africa: Implications for Inclusion and Human Rights”.

Assessing Regional Integration in Africa - ARIA IX

Signed by 52 African countries, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is, by the number of participating countries, the largest trade agreement since the formation of the WTO. By 1 April 2019, only one year and ten days after the signature, the threshold of ratification by 22 countries required for the agreement’s entry into force had been reached. The speed of this ratification is unprecedented in African Union history.

In July 2017, the African Trade Policy Centre of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Geneva Office launched a joint report entitled The Continental Free Trade Area in Africa: A Human Rights Perspective.

An Inclusive African Continental Free Trade Area - Aid for Trade and the empowerment of Women and Young People

The present report discusses the ways in which Aid for Trade can be used to support efforts to lower barriers to trade for women and young people, and promote inclusive gains from trade following implementation of the Agreement Establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area. Section 2 contains a review of the Aid for Trade developments in Africa based on Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) data and on priorities emerging from the 2019 joint OECD-WTO monitoring and evaluation exercise.

Civil Society Forum meets to launch the AfCFTA Consultative Dialogue Framework

Niamey, Niger, 03 July 2019 (ECA) – The Civil Society Forum will meet during the AU Extraordinary Summit in Niamey, Niger. The Summit is taking place to celebrate the Entry into Force of the AfCFTA Agreement and to launch the Operational Phase of AfCFTA Market, which also includes launching the AfCFTA Consultative Dialogue Framework.

ECA and TradeMark East Africa partner towards the implementation of AfCFTA

Kigali 2 July 2019 (ECA) - In an effort to accelerate the implementation of the AfCFTA, Trademark East Africa and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) signed in  June 2019 a Memorandum of Understanding, which provides the two parties with the framework to collaborate, with the aim of paving the way for stronger cooperation in helping countries increase their levels of intra-regional trade and investments.
