Report on Economic and Social Conditions in West Africa in 2010 and Outlook for 2011

Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) economies remain vulnerable and the sustainability of relatively strong growth rates is uncertain given the intensifying fiscal woes in the United States of America, Europe and Japan. During the 2007 and 2008 economic crises, the SSA countries were able to use their heightened economy activity led by booming primary sector (minerals and oil), and improved political and economic governance to consolidate their fiscal positions by reducing deficits and debts to sustainable levels.

This elect ronic brief highlights major act ivit ies of the Economic Commission for Af rica, Sub-Regional Off ice for West Af rica (ECA/SRO-WA) for the period between January and June 2012, as part of its work programme for 2012-2013. It also summarizes the technical assistance provided to member States, ECOWAS, UEMOA, MRU, and other West Af rican Intergovernmental Organizat ions (WAIGOs), during the same period.

17th Meeting of ICE 2014. Outcomes and Recommendations

The 17th meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts (ICE) of the Economic Commission for Africa Sub regional Office for West Africa (ECA/SRO-WA) was held on 3 and 4 March 2014 in Yamoussoukro, Republic of Côte d'Ivoire, with logistical and financial support from the Government. Experts from member States and representatives of West African intergovernmental organizations met to discuss economic and social development issues in the sub region. They also shared experiences in their coping strategies for growth and development challenges.

Africa can take the lead in financing its infrastructure

Dakar, 15 June 2014 (ECA) - During the weekend’s opening of the Dakar Financing Summit for Africa’s Infrastructure Carlos Lopes, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa stressed the need to boost Africa’s infrastructure challenges by addressing existing divergence in legal systems, harmonize policies and tap into the hundreds of thousands of qualified Africans in the Diaspora.
