Cooperation ECA-MAU: Mid-term Review of the Multi -Year Programme 2014-2015

The overall objective of the cooperation program remains the strengthening of the MAU capabilities for acceleration of the agenda of economic integration in North Africa. This is in particular to support the efforts of the AMU General Secretariat to formulate and implement its priority programs and strategies for a more integrated Maghreb.

Capacity Building for a Better Use of Remittances in Financing Development in North Africa

Remittances play a pivotal role and are an important source of external financing for the development of these countries. However, two interconnected phenomena are indicative of a potential decrease or, at least, a stagnation of remittances to family members: given the trend to permanent settlement of new generations in the host country, and the disappearance or at least gradual decrease of direct family ties with their home country, remittances to help family members are likely to shrink over time.

ECA to examine Agenda 2063 and Green Economy strategies in Rabat

Rabat, 28 January 2015 (ECA) - From 3 to 6 March 2015, the ECA Sub-Regional Office for North Africa (SRO-NA) will hold its 30thIntergovernmental Committee of Experts (ICE) meeting on: “Implementing Agenda 2063 - Planning, Mobilizing and Financing for Development”. Parallel to this event, SRO-NA will hold an Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on the theme “Strategy for an inclusive green economy”.

Tunisia: Migrants can help finance development in their home countries

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) office for North Africa will organize, in partnership with the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the Ministry of Social Affairs of Tunisia, a meeting on the role of migrants’ remittances in economic development, on 21-22 April 2015 in Tunis (Tunisia).

Tunisian State Secretary to the Minister of Social Affairs in charge of Immigration and Social Integration Mr Belgacem Sabri will chair this workshop.

North Africa must participate more strongly in setting the post-2015 development agenda

Rabat, 6 March 2015 (ECA) - At the conclusion of the 30th meeting of its Intergovernmental Committee of Experts considering the theme: Implementing Agenda 2063 for the development of Africa, the ECA Office for North Africa called for stronger North African participation in the negotiation of the post-2015 development agenda so that the subregion’s priorities, capacities and specificities would be better taken into account.

North African Experts Discuss Financing of Regional Development

Rabat, 2 March 2015 (ECA) - More than 150 specialists, government representatives, business representatives and civil society activists from seven North African countries will gather in Morocco from 3 to 6 March 2015 to debate on the theme: “Implementing Agenda 2063 for the development of Africa – Planning, Mobilizing and Financing for Development”. This event will take place as part of the 30th session of ECA-North Africa’s International Committee of Experts at Hotel Tour Hassan in Rabat.
