EAC Energy Security Policy Framework 2018

This energy security policy framework for the East African Community is intended to provide policy guidance towards better understanding, measurement, monitoring, evaluation and management of energy security risks and challenges in the energy sector of the region. The framework develops models for energy security monitoring, evaluation and management in the biomass, oil and gas and electricity sub-sectors through an approach for integrated overall energy security management.

East African countries agree to strenghten regional integration through the continental free trade area

Kigali, Rwanda, 22 November - Representatives of 14 countries in East Africa have agreed that the African Continental Free Trade Area, the AfCFTA, represents a unique opportunity to promote regional integration.

At the closing session of the three day regional meeting held this week in Kigali, Rwanda, economic experts and decision makers stressed that the implementation of the AfCFTA will create opportunities to consolidate domestic markets, strengthen regional value chains and enhance export competitiveness.

East African countries urged to up their game to attract private tourism investments

Regional cooperation in East Africa set to tackle energy insecurity

The Energy Security Policy Framework launched today in Kigali by the East African Community in partnership with the UN Economic Commission for Africa, ECA will help East African countries to tackle the increasing energy insecurity affecting the region.

“Deforestation, rising wood and charcoal prices, increasing imports of oil and gas are some of the symptoms of energy insecurity we face in East Africa. This framework will facilitate regional collaboration to collectively improve energy security.” , said Andrew Mold, Acting Director of the ECA in East Africa.

ECA supports member States develop AfCFTA implementation strategies, says Biha

Kigali, Rwanda, November 21, 2018 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) is working with member States on the continent to ensure they make the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) a reality, says Deputy Executive Secretary, Giovanie Biha.

Addressing the 22nd Meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts (ICE) in Kigali, Rwanda, Ms. Biha said the ECA was helping countries across the continent to develop national AfCFTA implementation strategies.

Rwanda’s Finance Minister calls on Africa to speedily ratify Continental Free Trade Agreement

Kigali, Rwanda, November 20, 2018 (ECA) –  The 22nd Meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts of the Sub-regional Office for Eastern Africa (ICE 2018) opened in Kigali Tuesday with Rwanda’s Finance and Economic Planning Minister, Uzziel Ndagijimana, urging African countries to speedily ratify the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Mr. Ndajimana said the AfCFTA was crucial to Africa’s inclusive growth and prosperity hence the need for more countries to urgently ratify the agreement so it can go into force.
