Vera Songwe urges leaders to act collectively to combat money laundering, tax evasion and bribery

 

Kigali, Rwanda 8 August (ECA)-The Executive Secretary of UN Economic Commission for Africa, (ECA) Vera Songwe, said that combatting bribery, money laundering and tax evasion should be a priority if Africa has to finance its transition to middle income status and increase prosperity.

Inclusiveness and community-level engagement crucial for AfCFTA’s success

Kigali, Rwanda, July 30, 2018 (ECA) – The African Trade Policy Centre of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), in partnership with Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute (TMALI) and the Pan African Strategic and Policy Research Group (PANAGRAF), last week hosted the 2nd Roundtable on Equity in Intra African Trade-Induced Industrialization and Integration.

The roundtable is part of a series launched in 2016, and focused on Public-Private-People-Partnership (4Ps) “Living Labs” in fast-tracking the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

ECA supports Comoros to implement its national energy strategy

 

Moroni, Comoros 8 June 2018 (ECA) - Through its office for Eastern Africa, the UN Economic Commission for Africa in collaboration with the government of the Union of Comoros and with the Stockholm Environment Institute- Africa Office, conducted a five-day training on energy planning in Moroni.

The training entitled: "Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning system (Leap) and Energy Balance Statistics was conducted as part of an overall engagement with the Union of Comoros to strengthen energy sector planning.

Eastern Africa has doubled its income per capita in a decade: ECA

 

Kigali, 3 May 2018 (ECA)- Eastern Africa continues to grow rapidly. As a result, the region’s average per capita income reached 740 USD in 2016, double the figure ten years earlier. “Albeit from a very low base, this is the result of sustaining rates of economic growth considerably higher than African or global averages over the period”  says Mr. Andrew Mold, Acting Director the Office for Eastern Africa of UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

This report provides an overview of the key macroeconomic and social developments in Eastern Africa in recent years. With the aim of setting the scene for more in-depth policy discussion, it has also reviewed the major structural changes in the regional economies over the past 10 to 15 years. Countries have been benchmarked against the average regional performance, highlighting their main achievements, challenges and opportunities for future growth and development. Where relevant, examples of different policy initiatives have been discussed to promote peer-learning.

Africa's prosperity rests on building citizen trust in governments and public institutions

Kigali 28 April (ECA and OGP)-In collaboration with Open Government Partnership this week the UN Economic Commission for Africa will organize a Roundtable Dialogue to discuss how anti-corruption and open government reforms in Africa could transform the civil service and build trust between governments and their citizens.

The high-level Roundtable Dialogue will be convened under the theme: Building citizen trust through anti-corruption and open government reforms, on Sunday 29 April, on the margins of the Kigali 2018 Ibrahim Governance Weekend.

One UN Rwanda marks 24th Commemoration of Genocide against the Tutsi, pays tribute to fallen staff

Kigali,  20 April 2018 (ECA) - The UN in Rwanda marked the 24th Commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda on Friday 20th April 2018, paying tribute to its 64 employees, including one ECA staff, brutally killed during the 100 dark days of 1994.

The commemoration was held at the UNDP Compound in Kigali, where a plaque was erected to honor the memories of the fallen UN staff.
