Partnerships at the cornerstone of moving forward the AfCFTA agenda

Nairobi 24 Sept 2019 (ECA)Collaboration between Trademark East Africa (TMEA) and the UN Economic Commission for Africa resulted last week in a dinner roundtable to discuss how to make the African Continental Free Trade Area work for women and youth.

Speaking at the event, Andrew Mold, Acting Director praised the collaboration between ECA and TMEA, saying that such partnerships between ECA, TMEA, the African Union Commission, UNCTAD, and others are going to be fundamental in moving forward the regional integration agenda.

Vibrant discussions take place around Kenya's AfCFTA strategy

Nairobi 17 Sept 2019 (ECA)- To accelerate the implementation of the AfCFTA, UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Trademark EastAfrica and the Kenya State Department for Trade organised a Forum together to discuss the draft national strategy for Kenya to harness the benefits of the AfCFTA. 

About 60 participants attended the two-day event in Nairobi. They included government officials, trade economists, university professors, development partners and youth and women’s representatives.

Debt sustainability essential for meeting the SDGs in Africa

Kigali, 1 August 2019 (ECA) - The ECA Executive Secretary, Vera Songwe, told African Central Bank Governors that concerns around Africa’s rising sovereign debt should not focus so much about its level, but rather the ability to pay for it.  Elaborating on this point, she stressed that managing debt dynamics well is all about implementing good fiscal policy, which in turn is linked to effective monetary policy.

Workshop to discuss Uganda’s Urban Strategy as nation strives for industrialization

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, July 26, 2019 (ECA) - The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the National Planning Authority (NPA) of Uganda are next week hosting a two-day workshop to review the country’s draft Urban Strategy and its associated Ten-Year Perspective Plan.

The workshop, running from 1-2 August 2019, will allow experts from the two institutions to collect feedback and inputs from government officials and other stakeholders before the finalization of the strategy.

Rules of Origin have the potential to 'make-or-break' the effectiveness of AfCFTA - UN Report

Kigali 2 July 2019 (ECA) – One UN Rwanda organised a policy dialogue to discuss the newly-released UNCTAD Economic Development in Africa Report 2019, which notes that, within the context of the current negotiations on the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), rules of origin could be a game changer for the continent, as long as they are simple, transparent and business-friendly.

ECA and TradeMark East Africa partner towards the implementation of AfCFTA

Kigali 2 July 2019 (ECA) - In an effort to accelerate the implementation of the AfCFTA, Trademark East Africa and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) signed in  June 2019 a Memorandum of Understanding, which provides the two parties with the framework to collaborate, with the aim of paving the way for stronger cooperation in helping countries increase their levels of intra-regional trade and investments.

Rwandan Trade with the Democratic Republic of Congo set to increase by USD 56 million under the AfCFTA

Kigali, 22 June 2019 (ECA) - When the African Continental Free Trade Area is implemented, the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) estimates an increase of intra-African exports of Eastern Africa by over US$ 1 billion. For Rwanda, much of that would be explained by increased trade with its neighbour, the Democratic Republic of Congo.
