Senegal, ECA and NEPAD to launch Infrastructure Investment Tool in Dakar

Dakar, 10 December 2016 (ECA) – A global tool designed to increase private sector investment in Africa's transboundary infrastructure will be unveiled in Dakar on 15 December at the King Fahd Hotel.

The tool, "16: Infrastructure Projects for African Integration" was produced by the Economic Commission for Africa and NEPAD Agency at the request of President Macky Sall of Senegal

ATPC and IDEP launch new training program on trade, gender and development

Dakar, 4 November 2016 (ECA) - The first session of the course on Trade, Gender and Development took place in Dakar, Senegal from 31 October to 4 November 2016. 

The course was developed jointly by the African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC) and the African Institute for Economic Development and Planning (IDEP) of the Economic Commission for Africa.

Statistics officers attend population estimates & demographic indicators workshop

Addis Ababa, 17 October 2016 (ECA) - As part of its capacity building programme, the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) of the United Nations Population Division, in partnership with the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the African Institute for Economic Development and Planning (IDEP), recently trained senior national statistical officers from eight African countries on applying useful demographic methods for the evaluation and production of population estimates as well as demographic indicators in their respective countries.

An update on eLearning course on ECA's flagship Economic Report for Africa

Addis Ababa, 6 October 2016 (ECA) - Africa’s growth continued to increase rising from 3.7 per cent in 2013 to 3.9 per cent in 2014. The performance was underpinned by improved macroeconomic management, diversified trade and investment ties with emerging economies among other factors. Africa’s social development indicators reveal the weakness of the observed economic performance: high unemployment and poverty coexisting with robust growth. This is a paradox.

Natural Resource Policy And Contract Negotiations

Objectives

The overarching objective of the course is to contribute to the development of a critical mass of highly skilled middle and senior policy officials and decision makers who will be suitably or better equipped to design and manage natural resources policy for the development of their countries and sub-regions. A robust mining policy must necessarily be built on a clear developmental vision. Such a vision must also inform the contractual negotiations that are held, so that the vision, policy and negotiations are properly interfaced to achieve desired outcomes.

Domestic Resource Mobilization And Investment In Africa

Objectives

The course aims to provide policy makers with a clear understanding of the key constraints to effective domestic and international resource mobilization and it will also present a range of policy options to increase the capacity for resource mobilization at several levels. While policy measures aimed at increasing the level of long term resources dedicated to the financing of the development process must be taken at both the international and national levels, this course will focus on the national level.

Gender-responsive Economic Policy Management

Objectives

The two-week course on Gender-Responsive Economic Policy Management aims at providing policymakers and development practitioners with the required skills and knowledge that are needed to identify and address gender biases in the economic sectors and to analyse economic policies and budgets from a gender perspective. The course is bilingual (English and French) and is delivered by the African Institute for Economic Development and Planning (IDEP).
