From an average of 1.6 per cent during the 1990s, the GDP growth rate rose to an average of 3.7 per cent between 2000 and 2014. This period has been marked by a significant catch-up in infrastructure construction. Capital expenditure increased from 20 per cent of government expenditure in the late 1990s to 40 per cent between 2006 and 2014. Over this period of prosperity driven by high oil prices, public spending rose sharply.

Africa should set COVID-19 recovery milestones now - Vera Songwe

Marrakesh, June 3, 2020 (ECA) - "We are yet to know how long the COVID-19 crisis will last, but we need to set the milestones for recovery now" said UN Under Secretary General and Executive Secretary of ECA Vera Songwe on Tuesday June 2, at a webinar on "Rethinking the economy and academic paradigms in post-COVID19 Africa". The webinar was jointly organised ​​by two Moroccan institutions – the National School of Trade and Management (ENCG) of Marrakech and the African Center for Innovative Sustainable Solutions (ACISS) of Cadi Ayyad University.

The Data Revolution in North Africa

The present report, “Data revolution in North Africa: putting data at the service of structural transformation”, reviews the current status of national statistical systems in the countries of North Africa. It then identifies the principal stakeholders in statistical systems, analyses the capacity of national statistical systems and identifies gaps and constraints faced by these countries in producing and using good quality data.

Policy paper: Misallocation of resources, structural transformation and productivity growth in North Africa

North African economies are characterized by slow economic diversification and persistent unemployment, especially among educated youth. Labour productivity has registered only a moderate increase compared with more dynamic emerging countries like India or Turkey. These patterns share a common origin, which lies in the existence of many distortions in the economy that prevent an efficient allocation of resources between firms and sectors. These distortions are caused by market and institutional failures.

Tunisia to host the Regional Capacity Building Workshop for the Northern African countries on Geospatial Information Management

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 19 February 2020 (ECA) - Tunisia will host a regional capacity building workshop for the Northern African countries to raise awareness and improve countries capacities in the production of geospatial information. The workshop is organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in collaboration with the Government of Tunisia through the Office of Topography and Cadaster.

Egypt to Facilitate SDGs, Agenda 2063 Implementation Through ECA IPRT Toolkit

Cairo, February 10th (ECA) - The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) held on 2-5 February 2020 a three-day training workshop on the Integrated Planning and Reporting Toolkitin partnership with the Egyptian Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MPED).

An ECA sponsored web application, the Integrated Planning and Reporting Toolkit (IPRT) aims to respond to African countries’ need to integrate both the Sustainable Development Goals (Agenda 2030) and Africa’s Agenda 2063 for development into their national development plans.
