SDGs: ECA and FAO organize training on environmental and economic statistics in Rabat

Rabat, 25 April 2019: The Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) launched on Tuesday 23 April in Rabat a joint training workshop on the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (SEEA-AFF).

Vera Songwe visits Rabat following tragic loss of two ECA staff members

Rabat, 20 April 2019 (ECA) - ECA Executive Secretary Vera Songwe visited mourning families and staff in Rabat (Morocco) Friday 19 April, in support to them, following a tragic car accident in which two staff members of ECA office for North Africa lost their lives.

Hind Jabir (31) and Samira Ezzine (54) have worked for ECA for several years. They are warmly remembered by UN colleagues and ECA partners for their generosity, dynamism and devotion.

Giovannie Biha visits Rabat in preparation for ARFSD, meets with SRO-NA team

Preparing for tomorrow’s employment: a revolution of mentalities is needed

Marrakech, 29 March 2019 (ECA) - Are Africa's education systems adapted to the needs of tomorrow? The answer is probably no, presently. While Africa is not the only region in the world that has to review its strategies or face the loss of more than one out of ten existing jobs to the digital revolution, it is now necessary for African decision makers to completely reconsider the logic of current education and vocational training systems, and even dare to experiment in order, to increase job seekers’ chances of meeting the requirements of tomorrow's job descriptions.

Libya: Economic recovery at the heart of ES talks with Libyan ministers

Marrakech, 27 March 2019 (ECA) – ECA Executive Secretary Vera Songwe met on Tuesday 26 March in Marrakech the Libyan Minister of Economy and Industry Ali Al-Issaoui and Minister of Finance Faraj Abdourahman Bumatari.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 52nd ECA Session and Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development and was an opportunity to discuss ECA support to the Libyan economy.

Strengthening of national accounts, SDGs and employment at the heart of ECA-Egypt bilateral meeting

Marrakesh, 27 March 2019 (ECA) – ECA’s Executive Secretary Vera Songwe met on Sunday 24 March with the Egyptian Minister of Planning, Monitoring and Administrative Reform Hala Helmy El Said and Deputy Minister for Planning Ahmed Kamaly, on the sidelines of ECA’s 52nd Session and Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development.

Their discussions included possible cooperation opportunities on national accounts. They also focused on collaboration on employment issues, a topic the ECA Office in North Africa is currently specializing in.

ECA and UMA take stock of their cooperation in Marrakech

Marrakech, 25 March 2019 (ECA) - ECA’s Executive Secretary Vera Songwe, met the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA) Secretary General Taïeb Baccouche on Saturday 23 March in Marrakech, on the sidelines of the ECA 52nd Session and Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development.

Discussions focused on the work of the UMA General Secretariat in support to member countries’ ratification of the AfCFTA agreement.
