Fund Transfers by Moroccan Expatriates: Context, Evolution and Prospects for Capacity-building

Migration issues are of central concern for both home and host countries. They affect several dimensions, namely, economic, social, cultural and even security. In fact, emigrant remittances take on significant importance in the lives of the people who receive the funds and constitute a major source of financing of recipient economies and a lever of economic and social development. They reduce chronic balance of payment deficits by influencing foreign currency needs, in a context of periodic tensions and financial stability in home countries.

ECA Office for North Africa pursues programme implementation despite COVID19

Rabat, 22 July 2020 (ECA) – Despite the impact of COVID19 on event organization and technical support missions to member countries, ECA’s Office for North Africa has met half of its targeted results for 2020 so far. This achievement was acknowledged at ECA’s Second Quarter Accountability and Programme Performance Review Meeting (APPR), a virtual meeting held on 20, 21 and 23 July 2020.

COVID-19 Crisis in North Africa: The Impact and Mitigation Responses

North African economies are hardly hit by COVID-19, induced by the lockdown measures which had negative impact on the supply and demand sides, and the drastic reduction of world demand, fueling a drop in North Africa exports. Spurred by the 50% drop in oil prices and the lockdown, Algeria’s GDP could fall between -4.5% to -5.8% in 2020. Morocco and Tunisia, whose economies have been severely hit by the drop in tourism and demand from the EU, may experience a GDP growth respectively of -3.7% and -5%.

Mauritania strategy for growth and shared prosperity: ECA supports pilot project for the Hodh Chargui region

Nouakchott (online), June 29, 2020 (CEA) - The ECA Office for North Africa, the Ministry of Economy and Industry, the Ministry of the Interior and Decentralization and the Wilaya of Hodh Charghi of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania on Friday 26 June an online workshop to initiate the design of the Accelerated Regional Growth Strategy and Shared Prosperity (SCRAPP) for the Hodh Chargui region.

Hodh Chargui is a region of Mauritania near the border with Mali, well known for its economic and demographic potentials.
