Training workshop for Francophone experts on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics

The workshop for Francophone experts on the Africa Programme for the Accelerated Improvement of Civil Status Registration and Vital Statistics is organized by the Regional Support Group, including: the ECA, the AUC, the AfDB, UNICEF, the UNFPA and the UNHCR.

The workshop is planned for a period of 5 days. The proceedings will be organized around the following themes:

 

-       Training on the principles and recommendations of the United Nations on civil status

Look beyond stats agencies: using mobile phones for data collection in Africa

Addis Ababa, 14 October 2015 (ECA) – “Ours is to have the citizen to supply structured data in the course of her normal economic activity,” said Mr. Dozie Ezigbalike, the Chief of Data Technology at ECA’s African Centre for Statistics during the opening of the Mobile data Conference in Addis Ababa.

“One of the problems of collecting data is the low technology base and reliance on paper based methods,” said Mr Ezigbalike explaining the reasons ECA started a project on data collection through mobile devices.

Compendium of Intra-African and Related Foreign Trade Statistics 2013

This is the seventh edition of the Compendium of Intra-African and Related Foreign Trade Statistics. The Compendium was produced by the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) from 1997 to 2005 on biennial basis and was discontinued since then. The African Centre for Statistics (ACS) of ECA has restarted producing the Compendium in 2011 and this is the 2013 edition. It is our hope that this publication will meet the needs of users at the international, regional, subregional and national levels, in particular the planning data for the African economies.

African Statistics Day 2015

Every year, on 18 November, African countries celebrates the African Statistics Day (ASD) with the objective of raising public awareness about the importance of statistics in economic and social development and in preserving the environment. This day provides the opportunity for each country in evaluating its achievements and in monitoring the progress in its development trajectory as well as in measuring the progress in global development goals. The year 2015 will witness the endorsement of the sustainable development goals.

Five countries revise lessons in agro statistics

Yaounde, 28 July 2015 (ECA) – The UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) is actively disseminating the Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics across five more African countries. In a strategic move, the Commission is currently running a training workshop in Yaounde, Cameroon, with the objective of availing statisticians with the practical skills and tools necessary for conducting surveys in agriculture, in order to help leaders formulate well-informed agricultural policies.
