Africa Data Revolution Report

Drawing from the lessons of the MDGs, the SDG process recognized at the beginning that to achieve real sustainable development, we must “leave no one behind”. This was articulated by the High Level Panel of Eminent Persons in their report (HLP Report), which also emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the process. The report also envisaged a new partnership involving governments, civil society organizations, development partners and, most importantly, citizens.

ECA to host Open Data Session at first UN World Data Forum in Cape Town

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, December 9, 2016 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa is organising an Open Data side event at the first ever United Nations World Data Forum, that will be held in South Africa in January, to help build consensus among national statistical offices and other parties involved in generating data on the need to work together to develop open data services for official statistics on the continent.

Top statisticians device strategies to strengthen economic statistics

Grand Bassam, Cote d’Ivoire, 28th November 2016 -  Africa’s top statisticians met in Grand Bassam, Cote d’Ivoire to discuss the status and challenges of producing economic statistics in Africa and to take stock of the various efforts underway in modernizing official statistics. Organized by the African Union Commission (AUC) and the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB), the theme of the meeting was: Strengthening economic statistics to support Agenda 2063 and Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.

Statistics officers attend population estimates & demographic indicators workshop

Addis Ababa, 17 October 2016 (ECA) - As part of its capacity building programme, the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) of the United Nations Population Division, in partnership with the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the African Institute for Economic Development and Planning (IDEP), recently trained senior national statistical officers from eight African countries on applying useful demographic methods for the evaluation and production of population estimates as well as demographic indicators in their respective countries.

5th Meeting of the Continental Steering Committee for the African Project on the Implementation of the 2008 System of National Accounts

The African Project on the Implementation of the 2008 System of National Accounts (SNA) has been developed by the African Group on National Accounts (AGNA) with the aim of bringing together regional and international organizations and development partners to address the technical and institutional challenges African countries face in producing timely and quality national accounts, in support of good economic governance, regional integration, and sustainable development.

African Statistics Day 2016

African Statistics Day 2016 will be celebrated on 18 November 2016. Each year Africa celebrates this day to raise public awareness of the importance of statistics in all aspects of socioeconomic life. The theme of the Day this year is “Strengthening economic statistics for regional integration, structural transformation and sustainable development”.
