Africa can’t afford a business-as-usual approach to statistics says ECA’s Biha

Addis Ababa, 2 October 2017 (ECA) - The 6th Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange (SDMX) conference opened in Addis Ababa Monday with Deputy Executive Secretary, Giovanie Biha, of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) stressing that African countries can no longer afford to continue traditional ways of processing and disseminating statistics.

Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange conference set for Monday in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, 29 September 2017 (ECA) - The 6th Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange (SDMX), an international initiative that aims to standardize and modernize mechanisms and processes for the exchange of statistical data and metadata among international organisations and their member countries, kicks off in Addis Ababa Monday.

ECA’s African Centre for Statistics (ACS) Director, Oliver Chinganya, says the Economic Commission for Africa and its partners are excited to be hosting the conference which will run from 2 to 5 October 2017.

African experts hone their knowledge of agricultural statistics

Rabat, 22 August 2017 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa launched today, in partnership with the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the High Commission for Planning (HCP, Morocco) a training workshop on food balance in agricultural statistics. 

ECA’s African Centre for Statistics will carry out this workshop on 22-25 August in Rabat (Morocco) in favor of experts and trainers from ten francophone African countries (Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Senegal, Chad and Togo).

SDMX Global Conference 2017

The 6th SDMX Global Conference will be held from 2 to 5 October 2017 at the ECA Conference Centre (ECACC), Menelik II Ave., in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This year’s conference is hosted jointly by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), with the theme "SDMX for the Data Revolution". ECA Deputy Chief highlights the vital need for sound statistics in Africa

Bujumbura 25 July 2017 (CEA): Ms. Giovanie Biha, ECA Deputy Executive Secretary, argues that sound statistics are essential to help African countries to analyse what is going on the continent and better plan policies to improve people’s lives. She stresses that there are still a large data gap that hinders policy makers from making informed decisions and that ECA stands ready to provide support to members’ states in the fields of statistics.

Regional integration: African Directors of Statistics to meet in Morocco in 2019

Marrakesh, 21 July 2017 - In a meeting held on 20 July 2017 in Marrakech, under the joint chairmanship of Morocco’s High Commissioner for Planning Ahmed Lahlimi and ECA’s Deputy Executive Secretary for Knowledge Delivery Giovannie Biha, Directors general and representatives of some 40 African national Statistics institutes called on the Economic Commission for Africa and the High Commission for planning to organize a regional conference on the role of statistics in support to regional integration in Africa. This event is to take place in Morocco in 2019.
