Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, September 28, 2018 (ECA) – The Sixth Statistical Commission for Africa (StatCom-Africa-VI) begins in Addis Ababa Monday under the theme; Enhancing National Statistical System capacity to support policies for Africa’s economic diversification and industrialization.
Rabat, 17 September 2018 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa, the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the National Institute for Statistics and Applied Economics (INSEA) of Morocco launched today a joint training on agricultural statistics.
The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in partnership with the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), organized a National Training Workshop with producers and users of gender statistics from 02 to 04 October 2017 in Kampala, Uganda.
The main objective of this national training workshop was to strengthen capacity of statistical offices in communicating their statistics, in particular for selected Tier I indicators (SDG 3, 4, 5, 8), to different user groups and to improve gender statistics literacy of data users.
The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa ECA) in partnership with the United Nations Statistics Division organized three workshops back-to-back from 26 to 29 September 2017, in Kampala, Uganda. These were the following:
a) The regional training workshop to improve use of existing data for monitoring gender equality and women’s empowerment in Africa
b) The regional training workshop on the online gender statistics toolkit developed by ECA; and
The workshop on data and metadata sharing and exchange is organized under the following expected accomplishment of the programme “Enhanced capacity of african countries to launch or improve institutional mechanisms and procedures, at the national and local level, for the production and utilization of SDG indicators”. The workshop is organized by the African Centre for Statistics, the United Nations Environment and the United Nations Statistics Division.
Cairo, Egypt, July 12, 2018 (ECA) – Africa needs to build its statistical capacity to produce accurate, high quality and timely data to inform policies that will support the full implementation of the sustainable development goals and the continent’s Agenda 2063, says Economic Commission for Africa’s Tinfissi Joseph Ilboudo.
The Statistics Committee, implemented as Statistical Commission for Africa (StatCom-Africa), was established in 2005 by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Conference of Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. StatCom-Africa acts within the United Nations policies and procedures framework and subject to the general supervision of the ECA Conference of Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. StatCom-Africa members are composed of African countries represented by Heads of National Statistical Offices (NSOs).
The workshop on administrative data, big data, and geospatial information for the compilation of SDG indicators is organized under the expectation accomplishment “Enhanced capacity of African countries to launch or improve institutional mechanisms and procedures, at national and local levels, for the production and utilization of SDG indicators”. It is organized jointly by the Economic Commission for Africa, the United Nation Statistics Division, UN Environment, with the support of the National Institute of Statistics and Economic and Demographic Studies of Togo.
Addis Ababa 13 May 2018 (ECA) - The planning process of long-term development in any country would be on a shaky foundation if the data and statistics are not readily available and are of poor quality. It is also critical that they are not only harmonized but also coordinated among government agencies that produce and store them.
