Africa working towards delivering credible censuses during 2020 round, says ECA’s Muhwava

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, July 5, 2019 (ECA) - The vast majority of African countries are preparing for or carrying out their national censuses as part of the 2020 round of census, raising the need for the continent to quickly address major challenges that can hinder delivery of results in an efficient and effective way, says Economic Commission for Africa’s (ECA) William Muhwava.

Some of these challenges include mobilizing resources for census-taking activities, technology use, training and device availability, among others.

Technology set to improve data quality, timeliness & dissemination of census results, says Chinganya

Addis Ababa, July 1, 2019 (ECA) – A five-day experts group meeting on supporting electronic data collection and dissemination in censuses-making opened in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Monday with Economic Commission for Africa’s (ECA) African Centre for Statistics Director, Oliver Chinganya, emphasizing the importance of population and housing censuses for the continent.

Mr. Chinganya said censuses were a fundamental source for producing small area statistics, adding timely dissemination of good quality census data was crucial for national and international development goals.

The Fifth Conference of African Ministers Responsible for Civil Registration

The Fifth Conference of African Ministers responsible for Civil Registration (COM5) will take place from 14 to 18 October 2019 in Lusaka, Zambia. The conference will have two segments: Expert Meeting (14-16 October 2019) and Ministerial Meeting (17-18 October 2019). The conference is being organized by the African Union Commission in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the African Development Bank (AfDB), and Government of the Zambia.

5th International Conference on Big Data for Official Statistics

The United Nations Global Working Group (GWG) on Big Data for Official Statistics was created under the UN Statistical Commission in 2014. The GWG provides strategic vision, direction and the coordination of a global programme on the use of new data sources and new technologies, which is essential for national statistical systems to remain relevant in a fast-moving data landscape. Big Data could fill gaps, make statistical operations more cost effective, enable the replacement of surveys and provide more granularities in outputs e.g.

Transforming Africa’s energy sector crucial for continent’s sustainable development, says Chinganya

Addis Ababa, February 05, 2019 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) will in 2019 continue to support member States in their quest to develop their energy sectors.

This was said by the ECA’s Director for the African Centre for Statistics, Mr. Oliver Chinganya, in a speech to participants attending a two-day workshop on Africa Energy Data Collection, Validation, and Processing that was organized by the ECA, African Development Bank (AfDB), the African Energy Commission (AFREC), Association of Power Utilities of Africa (APUA) and the World Bank.

At 60th commemoration, ECA launches Africa Poverty Clock to monitor progress against extreme poverty

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: At its 60th anniversary celebrations this week in Addis Ababa, the Economic Commission for Africa launched the Africa Poverty Clock. The clock is a customized version of the world poverty clock developed by World Data Lab, aimed at monitoring progress against extreme poverty, an aspiration of the United Nations’ first Sustainable Development Goal - SDG1.  The Clock provides real-time poverty estimates till 2030 for the majority of countries around the world.
