Cameroon Minister urges experts to render big data profitable for Africa

Yaounde, 3 Decembers 2019 (ECA) –  “By 2030, revenues generated by big data in Africa will reach 10 billion dollars, but how much of this will stay in Africa, how many of our youths will play a leading role in the creation of this wealth as a function of their skills and to what extent will the big data economy transform our private sectors and productivity” quizzed Cameroon’s Minister of Posts and Telecommunications Minette Libom Li Likeng today as she opened a two-day continental meeting on these issues, convened in Yaounde, by the UN

Let us make the invisible visible, says ECA’s Chinganya as Africa marks African Statistics Day

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, November 18, 2019 (ECA) - Everyone counts: quality statistics for better management of forced displacement in Africa, was the theme of day as Africans around the globe marked African Statistics Day today.

The biggest event took place in Tunisia where the African Union Commission was launching the Pan African Institute for Statistics (StatAfric) which is expected to work with partners in building capacity in member States for the production and use of quality statistics.

African ministers agree to up their game in efforts to close identity gap on the continent

Lusaka, Zambia, October 18, 2019 (ECA) - The Fifth Conference of African Ministers Responsible for Civil Registration ended in Lusaka, Zambia, Friday with member States agreeing to scale-up efforts to address the huge identity gap that exists on the continent.

The ministers urged their governments to avail more financial resources to help them revamp and modernize the continent’s CRVS and ID managements systems to ensure they leave no one behind.

Lusaka, Zambia, October 17, 2019 (ECA) - High-level participants at the ongoing fifth Conference of African Ministers responsible for Civil Registration (COM5) had the opportunity to focus on leveraging partnerships in Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) as they continued to seek ways to bridge the identity gap on the continent.

Hundreds of millions of people worldwide lack proof of legal identity, the majority of them being children who were never registered at birth.
