Current, reliable and trusted data critical for Africa’s growth and development, says ECA’s Chinganya

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, October 22, 2020 (ECA) – The virtual United Nations World Data Forum ended Wednesday with the Economic Commission for Africa’s (ECA) Director for the Africa Statistics Centre, Oliver Chinganya, stressing the importance of current, reliable and trusted data to ensure Africa leaves no one behind as it implements the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Agenda 2063, the continent’s blueprint for development.

StatCom7 ends with call on Africa to prioritize digitalizing continent’s statistical systems

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, October 15, 2020 (ECA) - The Seventh Session of the Statistical Commission for Africa (StatCom7) ended Thursday with high-level participants emphasizing the importance of digitizing the continent’s statistical systems; use of big data; data and statistics coordination; and political will for effective statistics development in Africa.

StatCom7 participants call on Africa’s national statistical offices to embrace big data

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, October 14, 2020 (ECA) – The seventh meeting of the Statistical Commission for Africa (StatCom7) continued Wednesday with participants emphasizing that big data must be embraced by national statistical offices’ work plans, along with new data collecting and processing technology.  

This would be key to the continent’s efforts to effectively measure, evaluate and formulate the right public policies.

Ethiopian President calls for modern African statistical systems for effective policy and decision-making

Addis Ababa, October 13, 2020 (ECA) – The seventh meeting of the Statistical Commission for Africa (StatCom7) opened virtually on Tuesday with a clarion call from Ethiopia’s President Sahle-Work Zewde for Africa to urgently transform and modernize its national statistical systems, especially in light of the continuing novel coronavirus pandemic.
