E-training on the Measurement of Trade in Value-Added (TiVA)

The African Centre for Statistics of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), jointly with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) is organizing a Capacity Building Programme on TiVA. The programme consists of a series of capacity-building activities in three phases: an e-training module, a virtual webinar, and follow-up national workshops and technical assistance.

ECA launches Price Watch Centre for Africa

Addis Ababa, 11 August 2020 (ECA) - The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) has launched a first-of-its-kind continental tool that offers a unique view of price variations in African countries, regional economic communities and at continental level. 

During the virtual launch on 11 August 2020, ECA Executive Secretary, Vera Songwe, noted that the role of national statistics offices and national revenue authorities in ensuring that this platform has timely, accurate & up-to-date data will be crucial.

Third African CRVS Day commemorations set for 10 August across continent

Six United Nations statistical offices work together to support countries in managing the COVID-19 pandemic

As the world tackles the spread of COVID-19 and its unprecedented impacts on economies, societies and the environment, we are all stepping into unknown territory. Everybody, from politicians to parents, from newly unemployed workers to nurses, from supermarket cashiers to schoolchildren in front of computer screens, faces great uncertainty. Quick Assessment of the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Africa National Statistical Offices Operations

Summary

A rapid assessment questionnaire composed of seven questions was sent to all the 54-member states of the Economic Commission for Africa to collect data on the impact of COVID-19 on statistical operations. Thirty-seven (37) National Statistical Offices (NSOs) completed the survey. The main findings are summarized as follow:

Mitigating the impact of COVID-19 on statistical systems in Africa

Addis Ababa, 2 April 2020 (ECA) -  The African Centre for Statistics (ACS) at the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) has engaged with directors general of National Statistical Offices (NSOs) in Africa to discuss ways of mitigating the impact of COVID-19 on statistical operations on the continent.

In their first e-meeting, which took place on April 1, 2020, it was noted that the demand for data and statistics to monitor the effects of the pandemic has peaked, although production has been curtailed to protect field workers.
