The 11th African Symposium on Statistical Development (ASSD) was held in Libreville, Gabon from 23rd to 25th November 2015 under the theme “Promoting use of Information and Communication Technology solutions in improving CRVS in Africa”.
Addis Ababa, 18 November 2015 (ECA) – “The importance of statistics in our work and in addressing development challenges in our communities cannot be overstated,” says Mr. Abdalla Hamdok, the Deputy Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa.
Launching the Solution Exchange for the African Statistical Community, a UN sponsored peer-to-peer facilitation service, during African Statistics Day, Mr. Hamdok said statistics should “come upfront when we are designing development programmes”.
ECA/ 18 November 2015, Lusaka, Zambia - There is a lot of fear associated with statistics, says Zambia’s Vice President Inonge Wina.
In her opening speech at the Africa Statistics Day Commemoration in Lusaka, Zambia, Wina argued the Central Statistics Office to “demystify statistics so that people can appreciate the value and relevance of statistics in making better choices as individual and as a nation.”
The African Project for the Implementation of the 2008 System of National Accounts (SNA) has been developed by the African Group on National Accounts (AGNA) to address the current challenges African countries face in producing timely and quality national accounts, in support of good economic governance, regional integration, and sustainable development. The Project is a continental, joint and coordinated effort of pan-African Institutions (ECA, AUC, and AfDB), Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Afristat, and Member States.
New Delhi, 29 October 2015 (Joint ECA/CII) - The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) launched the Africa-India: Facts & Figures 2015, in New Delhi in the margins of the India-Africa Summit. The publication is centred on the key sectors that Africa and India place the greatest levels of engagement.
Africa and India have had a rich distinguished history, first ushered by Indian traders led by the seasonal monsoon winds before they upscaled their presence in the 17th century due to the abundance of spices on the East African coast. The colonial period brought with it a new demand for Indian Labour. Today, the relationship is vibrant and multilayered. It is one of equal partners focused on prosperity and a quest for mutually beneficial economic development.
