Gender, Youth, Human Rights and Climate Change at the heart of the 5th ATPC Steering Committee Meeting

Arusha, 20 February 2020 (ECA) - The Fifth Steering Committee Meeting (SCM) of the African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC) was hosted by the East African Community (EAC) Secretariat in Arusha, Tanzania from 19 to 20 February 2020. The meeting was attended by ECA Sub Regional Offices, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), collaborating institutions, development partners, private sector, civil society and academia.

National Awareness and Sensitization Forum on the AfCFTA

This national forum aims to raise awareness among stakeholders about the implementation of the AfCFTA agreement, signed on March 21, 2018 and ratified on July 02, 2019 by Gabon. They will be provided with contextual information on the Agreement, the expected effects of its implementation and the strategic directions envisaged by the Government in rendering the continental market operational.

Gabonese stakeholders mobilized for Africa’s free trade

Yaounde / Libreville February 21, 2020 (ECA) - Senior officials in charge of industrial production, services and trade issues, as well as representatives of the private sector, civil society, the academia and the media of Gabon have been convened to a National Awareness and Sensitization Forum on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), from February 26 to 27, 2020, at the King's Choice Appart Hotel in Libreville.

WTO Membership and AfCFTA Implementation in Deepening Economic Integration in Africa

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 13 February 2020 – The Third Regional Dialogue on WTO Accessions for Africa is being held from 12 to 14 February 2020, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, focusing on "Deepening Economic Integration in Africa through WTO Membership and AfCFTA Implementation". The Dialogue, hosted by the Government of Ethiopia, is organised by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Secretariat, in partnership with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the African Union Commission (AUC), the International Trade Centre (ITC) and the World Bank.

Sierra Leone repositions its trade for the AfCFTA

Freetown, Sierra Leone, 4 February 2020 – The government of Sierra Leone, in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) are holding a validation workshop on Sierra Leone’s National Trade Strategy: Repositioning Trade for the African Continental Free Trade Area. Experts from the public and private sector, representing government, civil society, young people, women and academia will meet on 4 February 2020 in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Gender mainstreaming in African Continental Free Trade Area national implementation strategies

On 30 May 2019, the Agreement Establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA Agreement) came into force. The AfCFTA Agreement does not incorporate a separate chapter on trade and gender. The preamble, however, contains explicit reference to the importance of gender equality for the development of international trade and economic cooperation, while article 3 (e) emphasizes the promotion of gender equality as one of the general objectives of AfCFTA.
