Experts stress strong political will and policy coordination in regional Aid for Trade efforts

Geneva, 08 July 2013 (ECA) - A side event held at the ongoing Global Review of Aid for Trade was devoted to the analysis of Aid for Trade perspectives in Central and West Africa. The panel was organized by the Organisation International de la Francophonie (OIF), in collaboration with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

ECA renews cooperation agreement to enhance Africa's participation in global trade

Geneva, 8 July 2013 (ECA) - The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance Trade‑Related Technical Assistance (TRTA) and capacity-building for African countries.

Mr. Pascal Lamy, WTO Director-General said, “Building capacity to trade is a "must" step for Africa to more effectively participate in the global economy. ECA is uniquely placed to partner with the WTO in ensuring a more effective Aid for Trade for Africa"

ECA Engages Member States in Geneva Ahead of Aid for Trade Global Review

Geneva, 5 July 2013 (ECA) - Ahead of the Aid for Trade Global Review, the Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) today met with the African Group of Ambassadors in Geneva for an exchange of ideas on global rules of trade, as part of his commitment to interact regularly with representatives of African Member States in key diplomatic capitals, such as Addis Ababa, New York and Geneva.

WTO and UNECA join forces to boost intra-African trade

Addis Ababa 27 May 2013 (ECA) - The World Trade Organization in collaboration with the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) will hold a regional Seminar on Aid for Trade and Africa’s Trade and Development Prospects. The seminar, will  be held on 4-6 June with experts on trade and development from the WTO, the ECA, African countries and Regional Economic Communities in attendance to discuss, among other topics, trade-related development challenges for the region, opportunities and challenges in the international agenda and relevant Aid for Trade issues.

About ATPC

The African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC) was established in June 2003. The Centre, based within the ECA Headquarters in Addis Ababa, was initially set-up with the financial support of the Canadian Government through the Canada Fund for Africa.

Expert Group Meeting on "Improving Central Africa's Business Climate"

In Africa, there are still challenges in improving the business climate despite the many advances made in recent years. Indeed, according to the World Bank, sixteen of the most difficult countries to do business in are African. Among the six, four are Central African states: Congo , the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola and Gabon .

Aid for Trade funds can help advance Infrastructure Development in Africa

Addis Ababa, 23 July 2014 (ECA) - Aid for Trade (AfT) is one of several global initiatives launched, over the years,   to help developing countries to integrate into the global economy through trade. It was launched in the context of the multilateral trade negotiations in December 2005. As an innovation, the Aid for Trade initiative was conceived not only to mainstream trade into the broader national development strategies of the beneficiary countries but also to deal with broad trade-related constraints ranging from trade policy and regulations to hard infrastructure for trade.
