ECA launches index to measure Africa’s progress on regional integration

Nairobi, Kenya, 19 July 2016 (ECA)-The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) yesterday launched one of its flagship reports, the Africa Integration Index (ARII), a bold attempt to provide data on the status and progress of regional integration on the continent.

The report, unveiled at the ongoing 14th United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD 14) in Nairobi, is a product of strong collaboration of the African Union Commission (AUC), African Development Bank (AfDB) and the ECA.

Lopes calls for concrete policies that can deliver results for society’s most vulnerable

Nairobi, Kenya, 20 July 2016 (ECA) - Carlos Lopes, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), yesterday participated in a panel discussion on building economic resilience for the most vulnerable at the 14th United Nations Conference on Trade and Development where he stressed that thinking on sustainable development needs to move away from a thinking of inclusion and preserving the environment as ‘add-on’ policies rather than being at the heart of economic policy.

Focus on human capital and improve science and technology, regional integration report advises

Law student teams from South Africa and Kenya qualify for final round of moot court contest

Addis Ababa, 20 May 2016 (ECA) – Eleven African law students have qualified for the final oral round of the European Law Students’ Association (ELSA) Moot Court Competition on World Trade Organization (WTO) law, which will be held at the WTO headquarters in Geneva from 7 to 12 June 2016.

Expert group meets in Kenya to discuss continental free trade issues

Nairobi, 2 May 2016 (ECA) - An expert group comprising representatives of Africa’s regional economic communities, the African Union Commission, the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and academia is meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, to discuss issues connected to the Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA). The meeting runs from 2-6 May.

The CFTA, which is expected to be in place by October 2017, will bring together fifty-four African countries with a combined population of more than one billion people and a combined gross domestic product of more than US $2.5 trillion.

Measuring Africa’s progress on Regional Integration

Africa Regional Integration Index - Report 2016

Regional integration is a development priority for Africa. All Africans, not just policy makers and decision makers, have a role to play in making integration a reality for the continent.
Integration matters in Africa. It affects what people can buy; the variety of what is on offer at the local market; how easily citizens move between countries; where individuals travel for leisure or for work; how cost-effective it is to keep in touch;where people choose to study or look for a job; how to transfer money to family or get start-up capital for a business.

Regional integration important for development of landlocked African nations

Addis Ababa, 5 April 2016 (ECA) - Regional integration and cooperation is important for the development of landlocked developing countries through improved connectivity, enhanced competitiveness and trading capacity, market expansion and upgrading of value chains, says United Nations Under-Secretary-General, Mr. Gyan Chandra Acharya.
