Experts discuss ways to advance Africa’s trade policy

Addis Ababa, 22 September (ECA) - The African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC) of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) recently convened several meetings in Addis Ababa with trade negotiators, international academics, experts from regional economic communities (RECs) and other partners to define ways forward for Africa’s trade policy.

The meetings followed the informal assembly of African Union Ministers of Trade on the 11th World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial Conference that was convened by the African Union mid-September.

African Chambers of Commerce discuss private sectors’ engagement and opportunities in the CFTA

Accra, 12 September 2017 (ECA) – The African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC) in partnership with the Pan African Chamber of Commerce organized the 2017 African Prosperity Conference under the theme: The Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA)- Exploring Possibilities for Business Engagement across Africa in Accra, Ghana from September 12 to 13, 2017. The main purpose of the meeting was to facilitate private sector input to the CFTA negotiating process which is currently in progress.

10th Session of the Committee on Regional Cooperation and Integration (CRCI10)

The Committee on Regional Cooperation and Integration (CRCI) was established by resolution 827 (XXXII) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Conference of Ministers. The Committee meets on a biennial basis at ECA to review the work undertaken in the current biennium under sub programme 2 on regional integration and trade. It also uses the opportunity to review and deliberate on developments in the sectoral areas under the coverage of the sub programme and make recommendations that are to guide the work under the sub programme during the next biennium.

ECA pushes Africa’s integration agenda, inclusivity and equitable trade at the 2017 Aid for Trade Global Review

The just-concluded 2017 Aid for Trade Global Review that was held on the theme “Promoting Trade, Inclusiveness and Connectivity for Sustainable Development” saw the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) participating in key sessions with a focus on advocating Africa’s regional integration agenda, in particular, the flagship CFTA initiative and crucially, placing emphasis on more inclusivity and equitable outcomes in global trade.

Africa Regional Integration Index Report under spotlight at Global Review 2017 in Geneva

Geneva, Switzerland, 14 July 2017 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) yesterday hosted a panel discussion at the Sixth Global Review of Aid for Trade, bringing together regional and international experts to discuss regional integration in Africa.

Under the spotlight was the second Africa Regional Integration Index (ARII) Report that will be published in 2018.

ECA-WTO joint publication on role of Aid for Trade in boosting intra-African trade launched in Geneva

Geneva, Switzerland, 13 July 2017 (ECA) - The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) have launched a co-publication on promoting connectivity in Africa, focusing on the role of Aid for Trade (AfT) in boosting intra-African trade as well as the importance of increasing the capacity of developing countries.

Boosting Intra-African Trade Crucial to Africa’s Development says ECA’s Stephen Karingi

Geneva, Switzerland, 11 July 2017 (ECA) - The Aid for Trade Global Review 2017 opened at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) headquarters in Geneva today with the Economic Commission for Africa’s Capacity Development Division (CDD) Director, Stephen Karingi, emphasizing the need to boost intra-African trade.

Boosting intra-African trade is the most effective channel for trade to deliver development on the African continent, said Mr. Karingi, adding deeper trade integration is the surest way to speed up Africa’s economic transformation.
