ECA experts participate in 5th meeting of the CFTA negotiating forum

Addis Ababa, 4 March 2017 (ECA) – Experts from the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) recently participated in the 5th meeting of the Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA) Negotiating Forum that was hosted by the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa.

The forum, held from March 1 to 4, was preceded by an orientation workshop meant to equip CFTA negotiators as they consider and finalize draft modalities for negotiations for tariffs and services that will be included in the CFTA.

African Trade Policy Centre praised for work on intra-African trade

Walvis Bay, 17 February 2017 (ECA) - The African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC) has been praised for its efforts towards promoting intra-African trade including support for the CFTA negotiations, monitoring of the Boosting Intra-African Trade Initiative, and the success of the African Trade Forum (ATF).

Members of ATPC’s Steering Committee applauded the Centre during their 2nd Steering Committee Meeting (SCM) under the current (2016-2020) ATPC programme cycle, in Walvis Bay, Namibia on 16-17 February.

Strengthening Economic Corridors

Walvis Bay, 13 February 2017 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa, through the African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC) is holding a meeting in collaboration with the Walvis Bay Corridor Group and other Corridor management Institutions (CMIs) to establish the African Corridor Management Alliance. The Alliance is expected to coordinate the sharing of best practices and other strategies in support of the development and management of economic corridors on the Continent.

Designing the Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA): An African Human Rights Perspective

The African Union has committed itself to negotiating a Continental Free Trade Agreement (CFTA) with substantial trade liberalization commitments coupled with strong adjustment and compensatory mechanisms to attend to potential losses. Thus CFTA negotiations are premised on the importance of enhanced trade integration and the economic benefits it would produce, on the one hand, with an equally important commitment to equity, justice and fairness particularly where liberalization commitments undermine these values.

ECA to continue supporting member States with trade negotiations skills

A call to arms underlines the opening of the Africa Trade Facilitation Forum
