CFTA Modalities on Goods and Services Adopted in Niamey

Niamey, 16 June 2017 (ECA) - The sixth meeting of the Continental Free Trade Area Negotiating Forum (CFTA-NF) was held from the 5th to 10th of June 2017, in Niamey, Niger, followed by the third meeting of the Senior Trade Officials (STO) and the African Ministers of Trade (AMOT) from 12th to 14th and 15th to 16th June 2017 respectively.

The meeting was co-organized by the African Union Commission (AUC) and the Government of Niger.

African chambers of commerce discuss best practices in use of single windows in enabling cross border trade

Climate change and trade – impact on food security in Africa

Addis Ababa, 22 May 2017 (ECA) – The African Climate Policy Centre (ACPC) and the African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC) will jointly organize a session on “How taking into account climate change can help Africa to pursue better trade policies, with a focus on food security” on the margins of the 20th Annual Conference on Global Economic Analysis which will take place at Purdue University, Indiana, USA, from 7-9 June under the theme, “Global Economic Analysis in the 21st Century: Challenges and Opportunities”.

As the deadline for the Continental Free Trade Area looms, experts consider its future

Addis Ababa, 11 May 2017 – The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) convened a two-day expert group meeting to review the Eighth Edition of the Assessing Regional Integration in Africa (ARIA) report on the theme, “Bringing the CFTA About”. The joint annual report of the ECA, African Union Commission (AUC) and African Development Bank (AfDB) aims to support the negotiation, conclusion, and effective implementation of the Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA).

17 African Law students qualify for final round of 15th WTO Moot Court Competition

Addis Ababa, 27 April 2017 (ECA) – Seventeen African law students, including 9 women and 8 men, have qualified for the final oral round of the 15th European Law Students’ Association (ELSA) Moot Court Competition on World Trade Organization (WTO) law, which will be held at the WTO headquarters in Geneva from 6 to 11 June 2016.

To improve investments, Africa must strengthen policies and regional integration of its markets

Dakar, 26 March 2017 (ECA) – Africa wants to create one the most attractive economic zones through a homogenised customs union and economic community but regulation and weak integration hinder investment opportunities.

“Africa needs more investments that ensure effective competitive policies,” stated Anthony Mothae Maruping, Commissioner for Economic Affairs at the African Union (AU) on Sunday in Dakar during the African Development Week at the session on Aligning the Pan African Investment Code with the Investment Chapter of the Continental Free Trade Area.

ECA urges Africa to invest more in infrastructure for sustainable development
