The regional sharefair on gender equality in the extractive industries

UN Women’s regional office for Eastern and Southern Africa, in collaboration with the Australian High Commission and other partners, hosted the Regional Sharefair on Gender Equality in the Extractive Industries: Building on Good Practices in Nairobi, Kenya from the 13th to the 15th of October 2015. The Gender Equality in the Extractive Industries Sharefair builds on the success of the 2014 Rural Agricultural Technologies Share Fair which brought together over 350 participants and 90 exhibitors from across the region.

Lesotho Launches New Mining Policy

Maseru, Lesotho, 12 June 2015 (ECA) - The Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho hosted a ceremony in June to mark the completion of the country’s Africa Mining Vision (AMV)-compliant Minerals and Mining Policy. The new policy was developed with technical support from United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), through the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) and the ECA Sub-regional Office for Southern Africa.

Train negotiators to get contracts that serve Africa’s needs, policy dialogue decides

Addis Ababa, 06 May 2015 (ECA) – Participants at the Policy Dialogue on Challenges faced by African states in mining and petroleum contract negotiations hosted by the ECA in Addis Ababa concluded that for Africa’s natural resources to largely benefit its citizens, contract negotiators have to be trained to acquire excellent skill-sets.

Controlling Africa’s natural resources needs knowledge and good governance

Addis Ababa, 05 May 2015 (ECA) – “Growth derived from natural resources has not delivered goods in terms of addressing poverty because is it linked to exploitation,” said Mr. Abdalla Hamdok, the Deputy Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa during the opening of the Policy Dialogue on Challenges faced by African states in mining and petroleum contract negotiations currently taking place in Addis Ababa.
