Information Note for International Participants of the 20h Meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts (ICE)

The Republic of Kenya and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) wish to extend their welcome to all participants to the twentieth Meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts (ICE), scheduled to take place in Nairobi, Kenya, 8-11 February 2016.

The conference will be held under the theme: Institutions, Decentralization and Structural Transformation in Eastern Africa

Tripartite Agreement could boost intra-regional trade by one third

Kigali, 8 October 2015 (ECA) - Reflecting efforts to boost intra-regional trade and investment,  26 African countries have recently agreed to establish a Tripartite Free Trade Area (TFTA) by January 2016. The TFTA agreement comprises the East African Community (EAC), the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). With a total population of 638 million people and a total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of USD 1.2 trillion, the TFTA will create Africa’s largest free trade area.

What is ICE?

The Intergovernmental Committee of Experts (ICE) is the annual meeting of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). It is held annually to discuss key issues and challenges pertaining to the economic and social development of the sub-region with the view to making appropriate recommendations to address them.

What is the focus of 2016 ICE meeting?

The 8-11 February 2016 ICE meeting will focus on the theme of 'Institutions, Decentralisation and Structural Transformation in Eastern Africa.'

African middle class to become the niche market for tourism, ECA study shows.

Kigali, Rwanda (ECA) -A study commissioned by the UN Economic Commission for Africa states that Africa attracts only 5.1 percent of international tourists, mostly from outside the continent. These generate US$ 33.6 billion, which is only 3.1 percent of international tourism receipts, with South Africa accounting for 30 per cent.

Africa is still miles away from competing other regions such as in Europe and Asia.

ECA and East African Community at the front of addressing energy security challenges

Kigali, 2 September 2015 (ECA): Through its office of Eastern Africa, The UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the East African Community (EAC) are jointly developing an Energy Security Policy Framework for the EAC Region.

Development of the policy framework will be implemented with participation of EAC Partner States: Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.

An inaugural meeting for the project was held from 31 August to 1 September 2015 at Kigali, Rwanda.

Report on sustainable development goals for the Eastern Africa subregion

The present report on sustainable development goals (SDGs) for the Eastern Africa subregion is one of five subregional reports prepared within the framework of the Africa Post-2015 and Rio+20 follow- up consultative processes. The subregional reports, together with the Africa regional report, are intended to inform the engagement of African countries in the global SDGs process with a view to ensuring that the goals agreed upon are in line with the region’s sustainable development priorities.
