Industrialization for stronger and more inclusive growth in Madagascar

Antananarivo, 8 September 2017 (ECA) – The adoption of an ambitious industrial policy that focuses on spatial concentration, and in harmony with local industry and the sustainable development of natural resources is one of the essential conditions for inclusive and sustainable growth in Madagascar. This is one of the recommendations of the official launch of the country profile that took place in Antananarivo, in the presence of the Minister at the Presidency in charge of Mines and Petroleum.

ECA strengthens capacity in Eastern Africa region to better plan for energy expansion.

Kigali, 8 September 2017 (ECA) – The UN Economic Commission for Africa has conducted a training to strengthen the energy financial planning capacity in Eastern Africa  for energy supply expansion.

The 5-day training in Kigali focused on Financial and Investment Planning for Electricity Supply Expansion using the Financial Analysis of Electric Sector Expansion Plans (FINPLAN) Tool.

Blue economy, industrialization and mining vision: pillars of a strong and inclusive growth in Madagascar

Antananarivo, 29 August 2017 (ECA)- The blue economy and industrialization are potential drivers of sustainable and inclusive growth in Madagascar, while growth is accelerating in the country, rising from 3.1 percent in 2015 to 4.3 percent in 2017.

This new growth dynamic should help meet the challenges faced by Madagascar in terms of preserving natural resources and fighting poverty, which still affects 71.5 percent of the population.

East African experts benefit from training on energy demand, supply planning & management

Addis Ababa, 26 July 2017 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) recently hosted a course on energy demand and supply training for east African energy experts in a bid to strengthen the region’s technical capacity in energy demand, supply planning and management.

This will allow them to respond to current energy planning gaps; integrate energy sector planning tools in sector planning and acquire knowledge on undertaking energy demand and supply analyses and balance management.

ECA Deputy Chief highlights the vital need for sound statistics in Africa

Bujumbura 25 July 2017 (CEA): Ms. Giovanie Biha, ECA Deputy Executive Secretary, argues that sound statistics are essential to help African countries to analyse what is going on the continent and better plan policies to improve people’s lives. She stresses that there are still a large data gap that hinders policy makers from making informed decisions and that ECA stands ready to provide support to members’ states in the fields of statistics.

Economic Overview of Burundi: Agricultural productivity, key to greater growth

The Vice President of Comoros meets ECA officials amid preparations for a forthcoming regional meeting

Djaffar Ahmed Said Hassani, the First Vice-President of the Comoros, in charge of the Ministry of Economy, Planning, Industry, Crafts, Tourism, Investments, Private Sector and Land Affairs, met a delegation of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Moroni last week to discuss the preparations for its annual sub-regional meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts (ICE).

Djibouti: towards a regional logistics hub based on the Singaporean model?

 

Djibouti, 17 May 2017 (ECA) - With a level of fixed investment reaching 34 percent of GDP in 2015, Djibouti is on the track to achieve its ambition to become the logistics hub of the Horn of Africa. In 2016, the country recorded the highest growth rate in the Eastern Africa at 7.2 percent. Nevertheless, Djibouti’s commendable efforts have not yet succeeded in significantly reducing the high levels of unemployment and poverty, which remain the country's main challenges.

Somalia’s recovery depends on its capacity to strengthen and expand the State.

 

Djibouti, 11 May 2017  (ECA Press release) - Somalia is at a political and economic turning point, with a new government facing a serious humanitarian crisis that could hinder the ongoing recovery. While the London Conference for Somalia opens today, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) is launching a country profile produced by the sub-regional office for Eastern Africa. For the ECA, Somalia’s structural transformation will be facilitated by leveraging two main pillars: the blue economy and its youth.
