Regional industrialisation: when the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Kampala- 12 April 2017 (ECA Press Release) –Between 1992 and 2013, Uganda reduced the proportion of people living in poverty by over half and has registered a strong growth performance, accompanied by a rapid reduction in poverty rates. However, the country’s economic growth has not been sufficiently inclusive and did not generate enough job opportunities for the young and rapidly growing population.

Fastest-growing region in Africa suffering from slow pace of structural transformation

Dakar, Senegal, 25 March 2017 (ECA) - Despite being the fastest growing sub-region of the continent with an economic growth rate of 6.7% - second in the world to East Asia, East Africa is lagging behind in terms of its structural transformation. According to the Economic Commission for Africa’s Country Profiles, which were launched on Saturday during the Africa Development Week in Dakar, Senegal.

The Indian Ocean Commission endorses the Handbook on the Blue Economy published by the ECA

Kigali, 23 December (ECA) - In the Agenda 2063 of the African Union, it is asserted that the "blue-world" should be major contributors to the transformation and growth of the continent: "The blue economy is the future of Africa ". The "blue world" is made up of not only oceans and seas in Africa but also lakes, rivers and marine areas rich in natural resources.

Experts discuss land governance to increase agricultural investment

Working together for the prosperity of our continent.

 

Arusha, Tanzania 7 December 2015 (ECA)- The African Union's Agenda 2063 aspires to achieve an integrated, prosperous and peaceful continent. It is a bold vision that focuses on the long-term sustainable development of the continent, similar to that spelt out by the East Africa Community in its EAC Vision 2050.

The UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) argues that achieving both visions is contingent on African institutions operating and working together effectively. This requires coordination at the highest levels.

Collaboration, not competition, is key to a successful regional integration

Kigali, 28 October 2016 (ECA )- Africa's progress towards regional and global economic integration was the theme of a policy dialogue organized at Kigali Convention Centre by the Eastern African Office of ECA, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. Experts from the ECA, UNECSO, the University of Bremen in Germany and the development community in Rwanda argued that transformative regional integration could be achieved through collaboration between countries rather than through economic competition.

For an integrated approach to the SDGs and Agenda 2063

Kigali, 28 October 2016 (ECA))– Africa needs an integrated approach to implement its development agenda. The year 2016 marks a double transition period, from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Agenda 2030, and at the continental level, from the New Economic Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) to Agenda 2063.

Measurement of corruption in Africa needs to be revisited: ECA report

Kigali, 28 October 2016 (ECA )– Existing measures of corruption in Africa are predominantly perception-based, and ignore the international dimension of corrupt acts and practices, such as illicit financial outflows, according to the fourth Africa Governance Report (AGR IV) launched today in Kigali, Rwanda

The report titled “Measuring Corruption in Africa: the international dimension matters” was launched jointly by the  UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Rwanda
