We need your assistance to stop illegal capital flight – Congolese officials tell a Mbeki mission to Kinshasa

Addis Ababa, 28 August 2013 (ECA) – Top Government officials, heads of Parliament as well as leaders of the civil society and the private sector of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) say they are eagerly anticipating the recommendations from a High Level Panel led by South Africa’s former President Thabo Mbeki, to save the country from wanton illegal cash outflows that have cost the country over $54 billion in the last four decades.

African Governance Report validation workshops held in Tunisia and Chad

Addis Ababa, 30 July 2013  (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa participated in the validation workshops of the 3 rd  African Governance Report held in the past month in the Republic of Tunisia and the Republic of Chad. The workshops, whose theme was on “elections and management of diversity”, were to enable the two countries give their final input to the AGR III which the ECA is producing in collaboration with the UNDP.

In Africa, there are still challenges in improving the business climate despite the many advances made in recent years. Indeed, according to the World Bank, sixteen of the most difficult countries to do business in are African. Among the six, four are Central African states: Congo , the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola and Gabon .

The Sub-Regional Coordination Mechanism of the UN system-wide support to the AU/NEPAD Programme in Central Africa (SRCM-CA) has been in place since 2009. Its modus operandi includes an annual progress review meeting on the support given by the various structures of the united Nations family to integration institutions in Central Africa.
