Cameroon assures ECA it will ratify Africa’s Free Trade Area Agreement

Yaounde, 17 April 2019 (ECA) – “Cameroon will ratify the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement,” the country’s Prime Minister – Joseph Dion Ngute assured UN Under Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Commission – Ms. Vera Songwe, Wednesday. 

Mr. Dion Ngute gave the assurance on the first day of Ms. Songwe’s official visit to Cameroon, at the ‘Star Building’ that hosts the Office of the Prime Minister in Yaounde, during a charged audience.

ECA’s Executive Secretary Vera Songwe to visit Cameroon

Yaounde, 15 April 2019 (ECA) – The Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) – Ms. Vera Songwe will pay an official visit to the Republic of Cameroon from 17 to 19 April 2019.

The visit would enable her strengthen the Commission’s cooperation ties with the Cameroon, especially in support of its efforts toward inclusive and sustainable development, structural transformation, economic diversification, regional integration and trade, as well as the digital economy.

Memorial service held in honour of UN, NGO personnel who perished in Ethiopian Airlines crash

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 10 April 2019 (ECA) – A memorial service was held Wednesday in Addis Ababa in honour of 33 United Nations and non-governmental organizations personnel who lost their lives in last month’s Ethiopian Airlines crash that killed all 157 people aboard.

Families, airline staff, government representatives, diplomats and others joined UN and non-governmental organizations personnel as they mourned the loss of their colleagues and also celebrated their selfless work serving Africa and the world.

CoM2019 ends with African governments being urged to embrace digital transformation

Marrakesh, Morocco, March 26, 2019 (ECA) – The 52nd session of the Economic Commission for Africa Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (COM2019) ended here on Tuesday with governments being urged to move with speed to embrace digital transformation to spur economic growth on the continent.

The Ministers said if Africa does not move with speed to adapt modern technologies and ensure everyone has broadband internet access at least by 2022, then the continent will not be able to leapfrog development challenges in the near future.
