Songwe discusses implementation of Belt and Road Initiative with Chinese delegation

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, May 31, 2019 (ECA) – Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Executive Secretary, Vera Songwe, on Friday met with a delegation from China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and had productive discussions on the implementation of the ambitious belt and road initiative.

The visit comes following the signing of the Action Framework on the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road between the ECA and NDRC in April 2019.

Songwe and EU’s Economic and Social Committee President discuss AfCFTA benefits

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, May 31, 2019 (ECA) – Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Executive Secretary, Vera Songwe, on Friday met and discussed with a European Union delegation the role of non-state actors in ensuring the success of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The EU delegation was led by the President of the European Economic and Social Committee (EU-EESC), Luca Jahier.

Trade, investment, economic growth and migration were at the core of the discussions that came a day after the AfCFTA came into force.

Songwe and Odinga discuss benefits of fast-tracking Africa’s transboundary infrastructure

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, May 30, 2019 (ECA) – The Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa, Vera Songwe, and the African Union’s High Representative for Infrastructure Development, Raila Odinga, met in Addis Ababa Thursday and discussed ways through which the ECA can support his work to ensure the continent speedily tackles its infrastructure challenges.

Songwe, UN heads of agencies discuss need for better coordination and delivery

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, May 29, 2019 (ECA) – Economic Commission for Africa’s (ECA) Executive Secretary, Vera Songwe, on Wednesday met with key heads of United Nations agencies in Ethiopia to discuss how the UN in the region can coordinate better and deliver as one.

The UN Chiefs discussed how they can work better together in light of ongoing UN reforms as they seek to fully support the African Union’s quest for peace and sustainable development on the continent.

ECA signs $28 million contract with supplier to commence Africa Hall renovations

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, May 10, 2019 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) on Friday signed a contract with three companies for the multi-million dollar works to revamp the historic Africa Hall. The contract value is US $ 28,209,539.57.

The signing with contractor Africa Hall Projects FZE marks a paramount milestone of this iconic project. The contract for the renovation and refurbishment of Africa Hall is the biggest ever signed by the ECA with a supplier.

ECA Director of Administration, Carlos Haddad, signed the contract on behalf of the ECA.
