Greening Ethiopia Initiative plants 200 million seedings on a single day

Addis Ababa, 29 July 2019 (ECA) - A nation-wide tree planting initiative kicked off on the morning of Monday 29th July aimed at breaking the world record of planting 200 million saplings on a single day. India currently holds the world record.

Officially launched by Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in May, the nation-wide reforestation program, also popularly known as green legacy, is aimed at recovering the trees and forests that have been lost over the years.

Recipe for AfCFTA: New report looks at ‘what’s next’ for the Continental Agreement

Niamey, 6 July 2019 (ECA) - The ninth edition of the flagship Assessing Regional Integration in Africa report (ARIA IX) was launched on 6 July 2019 during the African Business Forum in Niamey, Niger.

It is titled ‘Next Steps for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).’ The report argues that AfCFTA’s success will be measured largely by its ability to actually change lives, reduce poverty and contribute to economic development in Africa.

Songwe: We need to tackle Africa’s energy challenge with urgent, bold and ambitious agenda

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, June 19, 2019 (ECA) – Africa needs to increase its levels of ambition and strengthen its policies if it is to close its energy gap, increase competitiveness and power its inclusive and sustainable development, says Vera Songwe, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

In a speech Wednesday to RES4Africa Foundation’s 7th annual conference on the theme Overcoming Africa’s Energy Access Gap, Ms. Songwe said; “We need to tackle Africa’s energy challenge with urgent, bold and ambitious agenda.”

Strong partnerships and good regulations key to delivering clean energy in Africa, says Songwe

Addis Ababa, June 18, 2019 (ECA) – The power of partnerships and the strength of good regulations will deliver clean renewable energy for Africa at the scale and speed needed, allowing the continent to unleash its full potential, Economic Commission for Africa’s (ECA) Executive Secretary Vera Songwe said Tuesday.

Speaking at the 16th Enel Focus On which was organized by Enel Green Power in Addis Ababa, Ms. Songwe emphasized the need for big investors to work with locals if they are to make speedy progress in delivering clean renewable energy on the continent.

ECA’s Executive Secretary calls for stronger multilateralism to achieve SDGs.
