Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, January 15, 2019 (ECA) – Executive Secretary, Vera Songwe, had a busy day Tuesday, meeting with ministers from Ethiopia and Somalia and receiving the newly-appointed Belgian Ambassador to Ethiopia.
In the separate meetings, the ES discussed cooperation with the three countries, ECA’s digital initiative, the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), poverty reduction, job creation on the continent and related issues.

January 10, 2019 – Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: Top African leaders including Heads of States, Ministers, CEOs as well as representatives from the African Union and United Nations will converge at the inaugural Africa Business: Health Forum (AB:HF) taking place in Ethiopia on 12th February 2019 on the margins of the 32nd African Union Summit.
The forum will unify Africa’s key decision makers in exploring opportunities for catalyzing growth in the continent’s economy, through business partnerships to invest in the health sector.

Addis Ababa, December 28, 2018 (ECA) - Africa’s biggest story in 2018 was the signing of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), which is set to change the face of the continent with the creation of an integrated market of over one billion people and a combined GDP of approximately $3.3 trillion.
Given the minimum requirement of 22 ratifications for the AfCFTA to go into force, the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) continues to urge African countries that are yet to sign and ratify the accord to do so.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: At its 60th anniversary celebrations this week in Addis Ababa, the Economic Commission for Africa launched the Africa Poverty Clock. The clock is a customized version of the world poverty clock developed by World Data Lab, aimed at monitoring progress against extreme poverty, an aspiration of the United Nations’ first Sustainable Development Goal - SDG1. The Clock provides real-time poverty estimates till 2030 for the majority of countries around the world.
AITF 2018: First Intra-African Trade Fair opens with call for initiatives that drive AfCFTA
Cairo, Egypt, December 11, 2018 – The first-ever Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) to be held on the continent opened in Cairo Tuesday with the President of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), Benedict Oramah, calling for the implementation of initiatives that will add meaning to that African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).
ECA and ICRC Agree to Strengthen their Partnership in support of Africa’s Development
ECA Executive Secretary, Vera Songwe, received a delegation from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) headed by its President, Mr. Peter Maurer, on 13 December 2018 at the Commission’s Headquarters in Addis Ababa. The Executive Secretary and the President of ICRC discussed the nexus between humanitarian crisis and economic and social development and agreed that this provides an entry for collaboration between their organizations.
