ECA chief pledges continued support for Africa’s blue economy

Nairobi 27 November 2018 (ECA) - In her remarks during the Leaders Commitment Segment of the Sustainable Blue Economy Conference on 26 November in Nairobi, Vera Songwe, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), pledged ECA’s continued readiness to “help Member States in developing their national Blue Economy strategies.”

ECA and partners to establish Continent-wide digital identities

Addis Ababa, 18 November 2018 (ECA) - ECA and Omydiar have announced a partnership to support African countries establish digital ID systems in Africa. The partnership, will go towards ECA’s support to the African Union Commission Digital Identity Platform for Africa. The support by Omidyar Network will also be instrumental in the establishment of a Centre of Excellence on Digital Identity and Data Privacy and building the capacity of senior officials in this regard.

ECA and AUC to host high-level digital identification meeting in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, November 15, 2018 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the African Union Commission (AUC) will on Sunday convene a high-level meeting on the need for Africa to embark on a digital identification drive.

The meeting will be held on the margins of the Extraordinary AU Summit to discuss opportunities, risks and lessons for Digital ID in the African context.

Vera Songwe discusses women’s empowerment with Ethiopia’s new President

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, November 13, 2018 (ECA) - Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Executive Secretary, Vera Songwe, on Tuesday met with the new Ethiopian President, Sahle-Work Zewde, and discussed a number of issues, in particular ways through which to empower Ethiopia’s women in decision making positions and business.

AfCFTA can propel Africa towards greater development, says Nigeria’s Trade Minister

Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria, November 3, 2018 (ECA) – The African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) has huge potential to move Africa to dizzy heights of development on the platform of the African Union’s Agenda 2063, says Nigeria’s Industry, Trade and Investment Minister, Mr. Okechukwu E. Enelamah.

Speaking at the 2018 Africa Trade Forum in Lagos, Mr. Enelamah said both the AfCFTA and Agenda 2063 provide the legal and policy framework for addressing the challenges before the African Union and seizing its opportunities.
