Climate change and trade – impact on food security in Africa

Addis Ababa, 22 May 2017 (ECA) – The African Climate Policy Centre (ACPC) and the African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC) will jointly organize a session on “How taking into account climate change can help Africa to pursue better trade policies, with a focus on food security” on the margins of the 20th Annual Conference on Global Economic Analysis which will take place at Purdue University, Indiana, USA, from 7-9 June under the theme, “Global Economic Analysis in the 21st Century: Challenges and Opportunities”.

Regional forum ends with reaffirmation of Africa's desire to stimulate sustainable growth

Addis Ababa, May 19, 2017 (ECA) – The 2017 Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (ARFSD) ended in Addis Ababa on May 19 with participants adopting an outcome document to take to the 2017 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), which will be convened in New York in July under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

The outcome document speaks to Africa’s desire to stimulate sustainable growth on the continent, create employment and eradicate poverty in all its forms and dimensions, among others.

Africa's youth need decent work

Addis Ababa, 19 May 2017 (ECA) -The issue of youth unemployment was at the heart of the discussions at the two-days meeting of Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development in Addis Ababa.

Youth unemployment is a global problem, although its manifestations in the African countries are even more stark.

Youth in Africa constitute 35 per cent of the working age population but comprise 60 per cent of the total unemployed. Even more so, most of those who are employed are in vulnerable employment.

Regional forum on sustainable development officially kicks off in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, May 18, 2017 (ECA) – The 2017 Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (ARFSD) officially kicked-off in Addis Ababa today with Acting Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa, Abdalla Hamdok, calling on Africa to stop exporting raw materials and primary goods to feed industries of the developed world.

In his welcome remarks to delegates, Mr. Hamdok said exporting finished products would help Africa empower its people by eradicating some of the challenges it is currently facing, in particular unemployment and poverty.

Climate change action is good for African economies

Addis Ababa, 17 May 2017 (ECA)At the eve of the 2017 Africa Regional Forum to be kicked off this Thursday, a meeting on Sustainable Development advocated for a green transformation and an industrialization that doesn’t harm the environment.

Speaking at the opening of the meeting, Ms. Fatima Denton, Director of Special Initiatives Division at the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) said that investing in effective management of environment assets is critical to reducing poverty and hunger and spur inclusive growth on the continent.

Nordic Development Fund teams up with ECA and partners on unique climate resilience facility

IPCC Sixth Assessment Report Scoping Meeting Kicks off in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, 1 May 2017 (ECA) – Over 200 experts from about 60 countries are meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to draft the outline of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6).    

At the opening of the five-day scoping meeting, which took off Monday at ECA’s Conference Centre, IPCC’s Secretary, Abdalah Mokssi, said the Panel has a mandate to “provide policy makers with regular assessments on the scientific basis of climate change, its impact and future risks, and options for adaptation and mitigation.”
