Women, rural communities most affected by human exclusion

ECA- Lusaka 15 October 2015 - Women and rural communities have borne the most of human exclusion in southern Africa. This is according to African Social Development Index – ASDI whose preliminary findings reveal that human exclusion is predominantly a female and rural phenomenon. Meanwhile poverty remains the single most driver of exclusion in the region followed by youth unemployment, education and survivor.

Inaugural Southern Africa Lecture Series

ECA Sub-regional Office for Southern Africa in collaboration with the African Peace-building Network (APN) of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC), will hold a seminar on “Conflict, Peace and Regional Economic Integration in Southern Africa: Bridging the Knowledge Gaps and Addressing the Policy Challenges” from 7-8 October, 2015 in Livingstone, Zambia.

Report calls for overhaul in mining laws to include women

Lusaka, Zambia, 25 August 2015 (ECA) - A new report on Women in Artisanal and Small Mining (ASM) in Africa has called for a policy overhaul in the mining sector for inclusive and active participation of women. The research project, a partnership between ECA and UN Women aimed at contributing to the diversification of the mining sector in Africa to include women as a necessary for economic empowerment and social transformation.

Report on sustainable development goals for the Southern Africa subregion

The present report on sustainable development goals for the Southern Africa subregion forms one of five subregional reports prepared within the framework of the Africa Post-2015 consultations and the Rio+20 follow-up processes. The subregional reports together with the Africa regional report are intended to provide information to the African countries to effectively engage in the global sustainable development goals process and ensure that the goals to be agreed upon were effectively aligned with the subregion’s sustainable development priorities.

Southern Africa comes up with roadmap on developmental state

Pretoria, South Africa 28July 2015 (ECA) - A regional conference on Building Democratic Developmental States for Economic Transformation in Southern Africa ended Wednesday last week in Pretoria, South Africa, with far reaching recommendations to provide policy guidance and roadmap on how countries in the region can achieve economic transformation and sustainable development through the developmental state paradigm.

Government is a partner, not a sponsor - Lopes tells private sector

Lusaka, Zambia, 25 June 2015 (ECA) - We need a proactive and creative public sector says ECA Executive Secretary Carlos Lopes. Speaking at a private sector event in Lusaka last night, Lopes said Africa’s private sector neededto be proactive by initiating, engaging and advising government. “We need a proactive and engaging private sector to advise government on the direction of policy based on prevailing and future trends.” He said that the role of the state was to create enabling conditions for business and not to generate funds and ideas.
