Experts discuss Global Compact for safe, orderly and regular migration in Southern Africa

Lusaka, Zambia, 22nd September 2017 (ECA) – A two-day consultative process on global compact for the safe, orderly and regular migration in southern Africa ended on 22nd September in Lusaka, Zambia.  Five meetings on the Global Compact are being undertaken on the continent. .  It was noted that migration has become a major issue that poses opportunities  and challenges for all countries.  Thus, the consultative meetings would offer Africa the opportunity to make significant and far-reaching inputs so that the Compact address the concerns of Africa.

SADC can create a prosperous environment for citizens and especially the youth, says ECA's Songwe

ECA launches the 2016 Malawi country profile

Lilongwe, Malawi, 1St August 2017 (ECA) - Twenty-one country profiles were released in 2016, covering Angola, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, South Africa and Swaziland in the Southern Africa region. Others are Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea [Spanish], Gabon and Chad for Central Africa. The ones done for the East Africa sub region are Burundi, Djibouti, Madagascar and Somalia. For North Africa: Algeria [Arabic], Mauritania [Arabic] and Tunisia [Arabic] were done, while Cabo Verde, The Gambia, Ghana and Nigeria were released for the West Africa sub region.

ECA urged to address development challenges in Southern Africa

Lusaka, Zambia, 13 July 2017 (ECA) – A two-day bureau meeting of the Inter-Governmental Committee of Experts (ICE) for Southern Africa ended on 13 July in Lusaka, Zambia, with calls for the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) to address key development challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, youth employment and economic diversification in the sub region.

African countries urged to leverage urbanization to accelerate industrialization

Infrastructure development key to structural transformation in Southern Africa

Arusha, Tanzania 7 December 2015 (ECA)- The African Union's Agenda 2063 aspires to achieve an integrated, prosperous and peaceful continent. It is a bold vision that focuses on the long-term sustainable development of the continent, similar to that spelt out by the East Africa Community in its EAC Vision 2050.

The UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) argues that achieving both visions is contingent on African institutions operating and working together effectively. This requires coordination at the highest levels.
