Africa is creating jobs but needs to do it in quantity and with speed

Kigali, 29 May 2014 (ECA) - The Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Mr. Carlos Lopes has argued that a number of people employed in decent jobs on the continent is still a fraction of what Africa’s labor force requires, pointing out that two out of three workers are still involved in precarious types of employment.

Lopes said that although the continent's economies are already creating many job, they are not doing so at the speed and in the quantity needed.

National Champions need to be nurtured in order to support regional growth and development

Kigali, 08 January 2014 (ECA) - The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), through its Sub-Regional Office for Eastern Africa (SRO-EA), will organise the 18th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts (ICE) from 17 to 20 February 2014 in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.

The ICE meeting will focus on the theme of “National Champions, Foreign Direct Investment and Structural Transformation in Eastern Africa”.

Energy Access and Security in Eastern Africa

This report provides a sub-regional picture of energy access and security, reviews case studies from some selected member States to highlight lessons on energy access and security, looks at the environmental, transboundary energy resources, infrastructure and trade, technology and energy, and economic performance issues at length. Policymakers, decision makers and energy sector stakeholders may find it useful as they deliberate, advocate and implement programmes and strategies that will collectively enhance the state of energy access and security.
