Our Focus

The African Centre for Statistics (ACS) is headed by a Director and reports to the Deputy Executive Secretary (Programme). The Centre is responsible for improving the production, dissemination and use of quality data and comparable data and statistics in Africa to support evidence-based policymaking, planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Agenda 2063 The Africa We want. It is divided into four main sections: Economic, Infrastructure and Agriculture Statistics; Demographic and Social Statistics; Statistical Development, Data Innovation and Outreach; and Geospatial Information Management Systems.

The core functions of the Centre are as follows:

a)       Strengthening the capacity of national statistical systems to produce, disseminate and use disaggregated data and statistics, with a gender dimension, to facilitate evidence-based policymaking, planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting

b)      Improving availability of harmonized statistics in the Commission databases and enhancing support to member States in their efforts to produce and disseminate comparable data and statistics;

c)       Supporting member States in the production and use of timely geospatial data, information and services for evidence-based decision-making in Africa;

d)      Contributing to the setting up and undertaking of censuses and surveys and making the data and information available;

e)      Implementing modern data collection practices using modern communications technology tools and methodologies to facilitate data capture.
